It’s a scary time to be a man.
I seriously worry that with the present administration (and enabling women) this situation will get worse. Remember, what it took for women to even get the vote! Being involved in the domestic violence awareness program in our county I am seeing the problem worsening (our smallest island, Shaw, had a murder this year). One problem is that some women have no place to go and stay with their abusers. Money, money and more money is needed to combat the violence toward women.
Since age 15, I have been attacked, sexually assaulted, pinned to the wall, run off the road, grabbed, kissed against my will, groped and catcalled by men. Two supervisors tried to rape me before age 21. I managed to break free and run.
Women and girls are not safe in America, and all over the world. In March 2019, I will take a women's self-defense class.
I refuse to let a few bad men destroy my opinion of half of the human race.
I am smarter and better than the men who attacked me.
Unfortunately, with some men, it is not about smarter or better but stronger.
Ya know...most of this crap in her song is stuff men can't do either, or at least shouldn't do if they have any common sense or self-preservation instincts. Walk alone at night, leave doors/windows unlocked, leave drink unattended...I can be a victim of violence just like a woman. Please quite patronizing me telling me how great I got it.
To all the supporters of her song that women are more special when victimized, yea yea, I know...we're all created equal, some are just more equal than others.
I'm hip.... But I think her message was geared toward a few select men in power.
Good voice and one of the few who can actually play the uke!

OMG your not the victim here
this has nothing to do with you and nothing to do with men also being the victim's of assault/anything
the song is actually addressing 2 seperate things
the first was discussed here last week I think, most of the song is based off a list generated originally by somebody doing public speaking I forget who originally put it up or who original author of the piece was but it had to do with asking first the men in the crowd what steps they took on a daily basis in order to not be sexually assaulted. he usually got no response from the men or after some silence some smart guy would say "not go to prison" because as men being sexually assaulted is not something we think about on a day to day basis, yes we may have decided not to do certain things or go to certain areas at certain times, but we do not think about it daily,
this is sadly NOT true for women, for women these things come up EVERY day
when the author asked the women in the crowd what they did on a daily basis to avoid being sexually assaulted, well that was the list in the woman's song.....holding keys as a weapon, not dressing how you want, not going out after dark, etc etc
the point is not that men can't be the victim of assault, the point is that we do not have to think about and adjust our lives to remain safe from sexual assault on a daily basis.
maybe you truly do live in such a horrible place that it is as unsafe for you to walk across the parking lot to your car without gripping your keys like a knife....... I truly hope not, it's not like that here, I live in a city, Toronto is actually the 4th largest city in North America so its bigger than anything in Tennessee, and I can safely walk through the park behind my house at 11pm, no its not that well lite, no I don't live in that nice a neighborhood, I actually live downtown
the second issue the song is addressing is the "it's a hard time to be a Yonge man" crowd. men living in fear of being accused (falsely or not) of sexually assaulting or raping women. the people saying "men are going to have to be careful now". look it hasn't even happened yet, so #metoo has taken down some big names who turned out to be Bad Guys, we have not had an epidemic of false accusations as these people (Trump included) seem to be afraid of. so far as far as I know most of those accused have been at least mostly guilty, and I am sorry republicans but I assume anyone who brags about grabbing pussy has actually done it, and that's assault so yup he's guilty
so all men live in fear of being accused (falsely or not) of sexual assault or rape
all women live in fear of actually being sexually assaulted or raped
yup your right seems unfair to me
maybe if women could kick men square in the nuts as hard as they could with no fear of repercussion we would be getting somewhere close to fair but compared to rape that still seems a fair way off to me.
@RiverRick Maybe...but the song wasn't titled "It's a scary time for a few select men in power".
@LiterateHiker I am sorry you had to endure that, but I am glad to hear you are taking steps to protect youself. I have a black belt in karate, and a brown in Tae Kwon Do, and have taught a few defense classes myself. I tried to teach my daughters, but being their dad what did I have to offer them, right?
@TiernanMcCann first, how do you know I'm not a victim? did you grow up with me? were you in court time after time after time while my ex was weasling out of her parental responsibilities and failing to support her daughters? Seem you are stating that b/c I'm a man, I'm not a victim...although later on you say that isn't the case...so your points are a bit confusing. And yes it does have everything to do with men being a victim. PEOPLE, regardless of sex or race, should not be preyed upon. You don't marginalize women who have been victimized (obviously for making stupid decisions in this song - ie. leaving door unlocked or walking dangerous streets alone at night)....why do you marginalize men? Do you think Boko Haram burning young boys alive wasn't that bad, but joined the sexist outrage when they kidnapped girls from the same school? I'm sure you don't....yet you seem to still subscribe to the western brainwashing that not only are men predators, they can't even propose an argument that perhaps they are also victims of violence or sexism.
"the point is not that men can't be the victim of assault, the point is that we do not have to think about and adjust our lives to remain safe from sexual assault on a daily basis." - I like how you divert from the argument. You hone in on a specific type of violence (sexual assault) and say men don't deal with it, therefore ALL violence toward men is a non-issue, or is at least not as important. And yes, men are typically not the victims of sexual assault, unless you include boys in Catholic schools, or boys assaulted by teachers in public schools (majority of which are women), or men who are in jail/prison for on average 6 times longer than a woman for the same crime
"maybe if women could kick men square in the nuts as hard as they could with no fear of repercussion we would be getting somewhere close to fair but compared to rape that still seems a fair way off to me" - just another example of someone stating they are against violence, but then saying women should have a free pass at being violent since they got screwed over...or allowing them free reign to wage violence against men would be 'fair', regardless if the man was violent or deserves said kick in the nuts. Do you honestly not see the hypocrisy of that way of thinking? Can you not understand how that double standard will not help men or women...and is the crux of my whole problem with this discussion. I'm not for violence against women, neither am I for violence against men. I have daughter's that I want to see respected for who they are. I also one day hope to have a grandsons as well as my current granddaughter, and that both are equally respected for the same reasons, not arbitrarily classified, labeled, or morally/legally victimized just b/c of their sex.
