I'm hoping that people here are more open minded than self described atheists.
after lurking & occasionally posting at an atheist site for a few months i found that most of them were engaging in group-think on almost every subject that came up. they didn't want any dissenters on any subject they all agreed on.
i don't believe in a personal god or an after life. the only thing i'm certain of is that nothing is certain.

Great insightful answers to this post!

Isn't christianity and all other organized religions using "group think" when it comes to their dogma or rules for their particular brand of bullshit?

it's all lies, BS & drivel b/c that's all that human beans are capable of.

@callmedubious Also they are capable of inventing devices linked to a world wide Web allowing you to voice that opinion. A bit of advance in medicine/vaccination prolonged your life past the expected 40-45 years of our ancestors on the African plains; time which I hope will be used to further your intellect.

I think, to answer the original post...many people will prefer to denigrate those we disagree with, and ostrisize them, rather than accept that there may be merit in an idea that we disagree with. When we have the choice to surround ourselves with the comfortable, we do, and we avoid that which makes us uncomfortable. It isn't so much group think, as it is an unwillingness to see that there may be merit in something we disagree with.

Hi, Dubious, and welcome to the website.

By the way, this website has a bit of a learning curve, so here's some info, in case you need it.

For members who are open to dating, certain thumbnails and profiles have a heart symbol on them with a percentage. This identifies which members are open to dating, and the percent shows approximately how compatible others are with them.

You gain website points by answering all the profile questions and writing a bio, which also earns website points, and helps other members get to know you.

Commenting on posts and writing your own posts earns more points. At level two you can private message people, and at level eight you get an agnostic T-shirt.

If you want to date, the website uses profile algorithms to find member matches, so the more details one includes, the better the match.

Many people prefer to see a written profile talking about interests, hobbies, and backgrounds that can be quickly perused to find others with similar interests..

In case you didn't know yet, to find members near you, click on the "Browse" button at the top of the page, then on "Members," and enter your preferred search parameters.
Click on the "Discuss" button, then "Nearby" to find members near you also.
Or click on the "About" button at the top left of the page to find links to FAQ or the website tutorial.

You can check for local events on the "Events" tab in the drop-down menu under the "Discuss" button, above.

Points are now being given to level 3+ members who chat. You can see chat rooms on the group main page.

Welcome! Hope you like it here. Most of the time it's not too dogmatic, but there are moments. And it's still better than many other forums!

thanks

A big fear I had too, part of the reason I was skeptical about joining this site, especially knowing the unfortunate past the community has had. Not necessarily this site, but the atheist/nonreligious community as a whole.
