Line dry or mechanical?

Was wondering if there is a bias on this site for people deciding to line dry or use a drier. Aside from my parents, I am the only person I know that line dries clothes.

I cannot line dry because my city makes the clothes smell gross.

I prefer somethings be line dried and others tumble dried. Towels must be tumble dried.

I have gotten used to machine drying over the years but do like the smell of line dried sheets and stuff. Because of the dog and cats, I do a lot of laundry so maybe just lazy. I have lots of birds who would be happy to decorate the laundry.

On a side note, as a adolescent and teen, we would on occasion steal clothing off of lines. I am sorry we did it but we were kinda poor.

Line drying is not something I’ve ever seen down here. It’s incredibly humid and that might have something to do with it. I have an extra table and rack to either flat dry sweaters and hang intimates

I line dry all my delicates, like panties, bras, lingerie and such. I also hand wash these items.

More durable clothing gets machine dried and washed.

My preference is to line dry. I don't like the way driers treat my clothes. But having said that I will use a drier for things like sheets, blankets etc. when I don't have access to a clothes line.

I do hang special things outside to get that "outdoor fresh". I'd do more but no one could tell me where the umbrella lines were in home despot. I gave up.

I do have a small washer/dryer set. Though, often I will air dry my heavy stuff and delicates, and then just soften them up in the dryer. My condo association doesn't allow outdoor clothes lines, but I can air dry stuff out on my lanai, or inside in front of the open window. My little bit of laundry per week really isn't much, so I use my best judgment while being mindful about the expense of electricity on my little island.

You know years ago, I used to chat on a political website in USA. It started because I lived there at the time and as a working class British lass I could not understand why anyone would dry clothes in dryers. I mentioned that I had been instructed by the appt complex owners, that line drying was not permitted. I asked my father-in-law who said (quoting) "Yes because people will think you are a poor Mexican"! I was horrified. He was an academic and certainly left leaning politically. What followed was the BIGGEST political debate of my life. From climate change to racism, to knowledge economy to American values and beyond...all starting from a discussion about line drying. Sunshine (if you have it) is free, why wouldn't you use it. I live back in NW England, known for grey rainy weather and I still mostly line dry where I can. If not I dry clothes indoors on a 'maiden'.

well I didn't know it was a class thing. Coming from the north in Australia, it is mostly sunny and everyone has a line unless they live in a unit. The sun is actually a disinfectant. I feel like my clothes are fresher, cleaner if they've been on the line.

@MsDemeanour Correct!

Machine dry. I don't have space for a line. Besides, it rains way too much here.

I love line dried sheets. I can't sleep in line dried sheets most of the year though because they pick up invisible pollens I'm allergic to. And right now I live in an apartment building with no line in sight.

In Wisconsin there are only about 3 months a year you could line dry, even if you wanted to or were physically able.

Tackling the big questions today eh? You know, I never really thought about. I always line dry just because I always have and electricity is expensive in my country. I do have dryer and I'm using it right now because it has rained, or ive been working for about 7 days in row.

Line dry: There's no place to plug a dryer in at my house... and it's just not worth the expense of adding a new line for only one person. If I had a wife and six kids there would be a dryer!

i do not have the freedom to line dry; the townhome association would have me dry cleaned if i did that. i PREFER line drying -- but even if the association let me, it rains and snows here an awful lot too. when i lived in california i line-dried all the time.
