You hear the phrase, "You need to be happy within yourself before you can be happy with someone else." or "You must love yourself before you can love others." Do you think those phrases are the same thing as being unhappy alone or is it more complex with many shades of gray?

I believe the first part is true and the second part, no.

I don't see either statement as unequivocally true. It certainly helps a great deal to be centered and accepting with yourself. Almost more important to my mind is being self-aware, whether happy with self or not. This helps you to keep your shit separate and not put it on others, to project less, to take fewer things personally.
