Learning to mind my own business.
I got home from work today and saw there was a package in front of my neighbor's door. I live in an apartment complex so his door is literally a foot away from mine.
My neighbor is old, if I had to guess, somewhere in his mid-to-late 80s. He's nice and likes to talk, but he's kind of senile. I've been inside his apartment to help look for his car keys and listen to him complain about other tenants or the apartment manager. In his apartment are a lot of photos of Trump and Trump's family and certificates from the Republican party for lifetime membership.
Anyway, not wanting someone to steal his package (because we've had problems with packages being stolen), I knocked on his door to let him know he got something.
Turns out it is a life-size, cardboard cutout of Donald Trump. He asked me to help set it up for him. Not wanting to be rude, I helped. He wanted to place Trump facing his window so people outside who walked by would see it. Now his couch was in the way so he set it up about 3-4 feet away from the window. However the window has a mesh screen and from outside you could not see Trump.
Without thinking I suggested, "Let's put him between the window and couch. That way he's right up against the window." Well, that worked perfectly and now you can clearly see Trump through the window, which I walk past every day....damn it.
I have a great book by an obscure author, Stefan Zweig, it is titled, "Beware of Pity". There is an apt saying "The road to Hell is Paved with good Intentions." Maybe that applies here. Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing. Ignore this guy as no good will, has come by helping him.
I disagree. Help others because you want to and need it, not because you think it will make life easier or better for yourself.
@joeymf86 The age old question is does altruism really exist. Many scientist say no. My question is that would this 'desire' to help over ride the desire to actually do some good or is it simply a knee jerk reaction? Charity is much more complex than most can imagine.
Despite your feelings, it shows your character. I wonder if the situation had been reversed..would it have ended the same way?
See? Now you have to move. Good going pal! Lmao
Nice to help your neighbor-I would have made sure no one could see it though.
