Just a random story...

Before I was born my uncle Manuel married a black woman. My dad's Mexican family shunned him for marrying her. I didn't know who he was until I was about 9 or 10 years old and was told we were going to a family reunion to meet him. My uncle reached out to my dad's generation and was well received.

So, I'm excited to go. We had lots of family reunions when I was a kid and TONS of uncles, aunts, great uncles, great aunts, cousins second cousins... I had my mom's side, which was huge and lots of kids my age that I spent time with on the regular, and less occasionally, my dad's side of the family who had a few less but still a lot, lol.

On the way to my uncle Manuel's I'm asking who's family reunion is it? My parents tell me my dad's. I'm excited to see my cousins that I don't see as often and my grandma and papa who called me Melissita. But when we get there, i only see 1 kid i know and about 40 people I've never seen before. Lots of kids my age, some young adults, people my parents age... all black.

I thought "huh, I'm black. I never knew this"

I knew my dad's side was Mexican and my aunts and uncles were like an "in between color" but i was surprised i was black! I told my mom this and she explained to me what the deal was... I was a little disappointed.

My uncle died shortly after that but im so happy he was reunited with his family and that everyone embraced each other with love.

Nice story. I love that kind of stuff. A drummer friend of mine, about my age, recently found out he had a daughter and grandchildren he didn't no existed. They all got together and it went great.

funny story I AM BLACK LOL Maybe one day we can look past the color of skin because that is the only difference. When I was married it was all wife's side. Now she is gone (not dead just gone) still my family drifted apart in different places so don't see them very often if at all. oldest sister died awhile back in car crash. Older Brother is not doing so well but his wife nagged him to move to Mo. and now she had a stroke and he said she had improved but that usaully happens just before they go downhill all the way. Its great you got to meet the uncles family. Do you stay in contact with them still? We need bridges not walls.

I used to do a lot of family history tracing. One branch of the family has a lot of long-livers. Not uncommon for those folks to live over a hundred years. Bought a book one family member had written with names, dates, photos etc. These people are Southerners. In the book was a photo of a light skinned black woman of the same name. It was noted that she was a descendant of one of their slaves, but she was ancient. I brought the book to one of the reunions and passed it around and didn't provide any context, just let the photo speak for itself, knowing how my relatives at the reunion think, mostly. My aunt kept saying, "she looks like an 'n' ". Not saying the derogatory term, just "n". I just said, "that's what they looked like on that side of the family", just to shine her on, before I confessed what the story was. Personally, I think we're all descended from people that came from Africa, as some time or another. And, we're all related.
