What are your thoughts on firearms? Do you think that a gun recall in the US would result in fewer shootings?
Honestly, I used to be very anti-gun, but my brother's suicide on 2014 - by hanging - made me change my mind. Far too many people do die by gunfire every year but it doesn't even make the top 100 of causes of death in the United States. Half of those gun deaths are suicide. Suicide, by any means, is number now the number 9 or 10 cause of death in the US (depending on the survey). I simply believe that we need to pay at least as much attention to mental health as we do gun control.
I also think that as long as we have 2.5 million people incarcerated in the US, we have an obligation to think hard and fast before creating more laws that might put even more people behind bars, destroy more families, and give the police more power.
I support the right to bear arms. I believe that it is necessary in our world (sad commentary), and history has shown that countries whose citizens give up their arms are easy prey. Having said that, I also support stricter rules and regulations regarding the purchase and ownership of them. This is for everyone's protection. I don't want to make it easy for anyone--not incredibly difficult, but not incredibly easy, either. This helps weed out some undesirables and/or dangerous people, and it could underscore the importance of being responsible.
It has worked elsewhere, but sadly I doubt that it would ever happen in the States. Too much money involved.
