Never ending growth.

What are your thoughts on the need for society to keep growing?
Is it caused by religion? Or is it just because we have locked ourselves into it and have no way out (that the masses would accept)

Do you disagree that we are very possibly breeding ourselves into extinction?

What would a sustainable, universally beneficial economy look like? "Like a doughnut," says Oxford economist Kate Raworth. In a stellar, eye-opening talk, she explains how we can move countries out of the hole -- where people are falling short on life's essentials -- and create regenerative, distributive economies that work within the planet's ecological limits.

Yes. Population growth all around the world is on an downward trend. We might reach 11 Billion people by 2100 but we might never reach 12 Billion if the trends continue.

I’m encountering young adults so burdened by college debt they may never have kids… They’re late to the working world due to years spent in college. Late to home ownership due to the college debt. Late to marriage, same reasons.. But they’ve got dogs & cats!

Yes, the religious pretend the planet was put here for human consumption … before magically moved to another one.. And, just as the catholics before them, to expand their cults, they breed.

Then there are the world's poor, breeding out of ignorance, or ‘replacement children’ for those expected to die of disease or malnutrition.. With continued aid, their numbers will likely grow, too.

So, those who should have children don’t, and those who shouldn’t, have too many. The US is sick, so I look to Europe; how and what are they doing?

the opposite can actually happen.. any 3rd world country who receives the same access to technology and health care that we do, their birth rate actually goes down..

the lower the poverty, the higher the education, and the more equality , the lower the birthrate.

@hippydog I’ve heard the studies about poverty struck nations, but with governments equally corrupt as my own, few if any appear to escape and remain outside the cycle. There’s not enough widespread success to consider it a success..

what do you mean by society and growth? do you mean mere population? no bad idea. do you mean grow in sophistication? yes, of course. it's not happening, though.

is what caused by religion? i don't see religion as related at all to this question. of course i am not clicking the links. not going to comment on the economy, sorry.

g

"by society and growth?"
capitalism.. the entire western economy and GDP is based on the fact that it will always grow.

"is what caused by religion? "
both the muslims and christian religions are told they must multiply.
"Be fruitful and multiply" is the very first of 661 direct commandments. God doesn’t seem to be merely making a suggestion here but instead issuing a no-nonsense order.

@hippydog i am not in favor of unrestrained capitalism so while i don't know whether it will grow, i sure hope not.

g

@hippydog not every religion follows its bible in modern days. judaism doesn't condone stoning people to death for example.

g

@genessa " am not in favor of unrestrained capitalism so while i don't know whether it will grow, i sure hope not"

maybe i should say economy then (which is based on capitalism).. our economies are completely based and rely on never ending growth. its not a maybe.. its how it is.. and there are no plans to change it.

@hippydog lol actually there are plans. they may never go into effect but they exist.

g

@genessa "actually there are plans. they may never go into effect but they exist"

citations please.

@hippydog i can't cite. sorry. working from memory. no one in power is planning it anyway.

No I do not understand the goal of continuing to expand the human population.

I feel we are in the minority.
