I live in an assisted living affair and believe it was a mistake on my part to move here. Before my wife died she thought I should move in here so someone would keep track of my pills. Well, I can get help with that without living here.

As part of your decision making, consider that while you are able to live independently now, your need for help may increase over time. Being closer to family members will be a plus, as will living in a continuum of care community. These let you buy in for a set rate that remains steady even if over time you need to switch from independent living to assisted living or even memory care. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth exploring. My parents erred by moving from their home to an apartment and then 3 months later moving to a different place because my dad needed more assistance. It was an expensive and stressful year for them.Good luck!

counties vary. it would be worth checking anyway. meanwhile, would it be better to seek another facility, or is it the very concept of being in such a place what bothers you? if we knew why it was a mistake (and what you'd prefer) we might better be able to help. if your county is anything like mine, and you're on any kind of county, state or federal assistance, they've taken all your money to pay for the facility, but that doesn't mean you are not allowed to leave, and you'd still get the assistance, which means you might not be able to get a down payment going anywhere but someone, somewhere would understand and be able to help.

Why do you think it was a mistake?

I just don't feel at home here. I am not restricted and have my car. I come and go when I want. But most of these people are much worse off than I am. But they do laundry, clean the room, lots of advantages. The problem is that I don't feel at home here.

@drussett yeah, that can take a while to feel at home somewhere. Try to get to know your fellow residents, maybe you'll find a great community!

Since you are already there, you probably can't get a county case worker to help, since the county will count them as you primary care givers. Look for some free legal aid assistance. Best luck. A friend's ex is in a similar situation. Not sure the quality of the place you are in; and if you want out, that question is moot, unless it is substandard, then legal aid may be better able to help you.

It's not substandard. In fact, the place is VERY nice and well run. It's just that I don't like being here. This weekend my son from California will be here and I will discuss with him the pros and cons of moving to California. I am voluntarily here, and can leave when I want, but don't think I want to buy another house. I think, in the end, moving to California will be the best answer. Maybe a senior citizen community or something.
