If you are unfamiliar with Mexican culture, this is an observance very different from Halloween, with roots in indigenous, pre-Columbian cultures. It can be very personal, with remembrances of people passed and things lost. The apparent playfulness involving death -- something very much feared in many cultures -- signifies a world view in which death and life are inextricably intertwined, and the idea that one can't exist without the other. So, death is celebrated, revered, embraced. I think these metaphors point to a healthier view of life and death than the negativity and denial often found elsewhere. Memento mori!
