Best wishes to all who might observe Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) today! Condolences if your loss was recent. If you are unfamiliar with Mexican culture, this is an observance very different from Halloween, with roots in indigenous, pre-Columbian cultures. It can be very personal, with remembrances of people passed and things lost. The apparent playfulness involving death -- something very much feared in many cultures -- signifies a world view in which death and life are inextricably intertwined, and the idea that one can't exist without the other. So, death is celebrated, revered, embraced. I think these metaphors point to a healthier view of life and death than the negativity and denial often found elsewhere. Memento mori!
