Does anyone in this group suffer from seasonal affective disorder. When it is dark when I start work and dark when I finish work I have a hard time feeling like anything but a mushroom in a cave.

Does anyone share the same challenge? How do you deal with it?

I got myself a small full-spectrum light. It helps to use it a little each day.

...yep-was on farm(where it manifests
strong because of constant out door
work)and saw it in myself and others.Sun
light greatly diminished mood swings/artificial
BRIGHT light I'm told helps(expose yourself
early ,before day begins)balance what&
when you have to be sharp!!!

Same here. During dark days of winter, I lose my appetite. My weight drops.

Exercise, taking extra vitamin D, and full-spectrum light bulbs help tremendously.

My sister and one of my neices thought she suffered from that. but it turned out they just had a Vitamin D deficiency. Not enough sunlight for their bodies to make vitamin D. Both have many of the same symptoms. Their doctors prescribed mega doses of Vitamin D to ge levels back up and then put them on supplements. They are a lot better now.

I have that box checked as well.

I have summer SAD.

What's that?

@Bigwavedave It's kind of the same as winter SAD. A lot fewer people have summer SAD though. It's an excess of sun though, not a lack of sun.

I make it a point of getting some sort of light each day, even if it means I have to run errands in the middle of the day...walking and other exercise definitely helps alleviate mood swings for me...I also try to squeeze in a trip to a warmer climate during the worst of winter...and I sleep more in winter but also do more knitting, a hobby which helps!

I haven’t been professionally diagnosed with it but am pretty sure I have it. It was somewhat minor up until last year because I had kids at home and was “forced” out of the house.

Last year I got divorced, my oldest left for college, and my youngest lives with her dad full time. I found myself rarely leaving my apartment for anything but work. I live in MN so the cold and snow was also a deterrent for me.

This year I plan to start volunteering after the holiday rush to make myself get out. I’m hoping it will also enlarge my social circle. Currently researching volunteering with our library association or animal shelter (or both).

Me too, Its hard to say goodbye to evening hikes.

I bought a head lantern and walk in the evenings . But it sort of sucks.

@Bigwavedave ...try morning
exercise at night sets a higher resting
heart rate(not good)

@BBJong thanks you found my weakness. Morning

I'm not sure if it is the dark, or the endless Christmas music.

Ho ho ho

Don’t think I do.. Though always made an effort to ‘get outside,’ which seemed to keep it at bay. And that was back in the Pacific NW. Over East (if just to your North), you’ve got it great … sunshine & blue sky for weeks during the winter!

Funny, after 3 days of gray, people around here sound ready to put bullets through their heads. I’ve warned them not to move to the PNW ..it can be 3 weeks, if not seemingly 3 months of ..gloomy gray 😕

That would be very difficult for me

@Bigwavedave I’m pretty sure everyone has a hard time there, I think it has the highest number of suicides nationally ..as well as the most coffee shops… Always thought when I lived there - a Sunny Day should be an instant ‘state holiday!’ Stay put 🙂

Not really. I'm miserable year round. During the winter months, I'm also cold.

Lol you need to work on this as well.

Surprisingly many people here in Florida live in the dark. Homes have small windows usually covered with closed blinds and/or draperies. Supposedly to keep the heat out and save electricity. I felt like I lived in the dark for 23 years. My current apartment is so much brighter than any home I lived in before. My blinds are open during the day even when it’s in th 90’s. There are a few downsides but right now I’m not motivated to move. I love the light.

I have a shop inside that has BRIGHT LIGHTS.... It helps! I love working on projects during winter.

I have a verilux light therapy lamp. I made it through last winter without it. But I am sure not feeling jolly today
