Any one note the U.S. Navy allowed refugees to drown in a sinking boat? That bastard XO should burn. Not MY Navy. Flagrant disregard for Naval law (look it up, I've studied it). I earned a medal, from Congress, in 80, for my ship picking up Vietnamese refugees (first U.S. Naval vessel to do so). If it would do any good, I would send the thing back. PMO Piss Me Off.
I suspect there is more to this than what is presented in the article. It is unimaginable to me that any USN vessel would avoid or hesitate to perform rescue operations once a scene had been assessed.
Things that honorable men (and women) do are never tarnished by the actions of a coward. You should NEVER send it back to the cowards.
Well, they rescued 42. Is it possible there was a delay so they could determine that there was no threat?
Also, who is XO and PMO? XO stands for hugs and kisses where I’m from.
Executive officer or Captain of the ship.
My mistake, and I spent 3 years I meant the CO or commanding officer or Captain. XO is the 2nd in command dorry.b
This is disgraceful. I feel like if the occupant of the White House is aware of it, he would laugh.
Here's a link. [amp.theguardian.com]
Thanks for that. Though it's amazing that this happened months ago, it hasn't been brought into the media till recently, at least, in the U.S.
Do you have a link to this? My father is a WWII Navy vet who saved German sailors from drowning. I want to hear what he has to say about it.
Newsweek has a good article on it.
@Beowulfsfriend , I'll get a copy. Thanks!
It could have been worse...I remember seeing an actual film taken of an American submarine crew shooting Japanese survivors of a Japanese ship they had just torpedoed. Some of the Japanese were floating in the water pretending to be dead...but that did not help them. It would seem that executing Japanese during WWII was not worthy of outrage or even condemnation.
I can't agree. Two evils can not be compared as both are wrong.
Yeah I don't see a connection between killing the opposing side in a war and allowing refugees to die. If anything thats not quite as bad since we were in a war against them. Both immoral acts but slightly more excuse to kill people who are fighting a war against you if thats the position you find yourself in. I may have misunderstood, if that was a civilian ship it'd be another matter. Both equally bad, same result if they're both done intentionally.
This sounds terrible. Where was it?
