Though even funnier, in a sad sort of way, I am told that some artists in the middle ages often covered up the belly area with fig leaves or whatever, because the problem of Adam and Eve's navels was regarded as so serious by the church that you could find yourself in deep trouble, ( the usual jail, torture, take all your money, burn you if it was a cold day, etc ) if you got it wrong according to whoever was in power at the time.
