This poor numb fuck that got himself killed by the that tribe he was molesting off the cost of India the other day, follows in a long tradition of similar asshattery in the name of Jesus. I recall when I was at Bible Institute in the early 1970s, there was a youngster who got himself similarly aerated with a few dozen arrows somewhere in the Amazon basin. He was a bush pilot with a young wife, flush with the "knowledge" that god wanted him to bring the gospel to the heathen savages of this particular tribe. IIRC, he worked under the auspices of Wycliffe Bible Translators, which takes as its mission to provide all tribes that lack a written language, with a writing system and then give them a New Testament translation in their language. They believe that when this task is complete, it will usher in the Second Coming and the end of days.
Wycliffe promptly turned this guy into a martyr and he was held up as an example of courage and purpose in a godless world. Embarrassed as I am that I am a former evangelical, even at my most credulous I was not comfortable with the notion of ramming Jesus down the throats of vulnerable people who haven't asked for same. I certainly would have considered it an ignominious end to die in the service of such a notion.
There was another incident around the same time in the same area, five young men speared to death when they made the mistake of showing them a picture of a woman who had fled the tribe during internicene warfare years earlier. This convinced the natives that the white men were in possession of the woman's spirit -- not exactly an unusual response to seeing a photograph for the first time when not familiar with the technology.
"I just wanted to put this out there in the ether"
I believe in karma. You don't have to be religious to believe in it.
