My grandmother used to serve me that when I visited her when I was a kid. Wouldn't be surprised if it got me hooked on the taste of coffee.

That should have been posted in the unusual words group....I’ve never heard of it. It sounds disgusting.

same here.

Postum was basically made from roasted grain, especially barley. During WW2, the Germans made an ersatz coffee using roasted acorns. Postum, like Rooibos, contains no caffeine.
I presume you've heard of Rooibos? I grew up drinking this alternative to tea whenever I felt "tea-d out" In Uganda I used to drink Postum laced with Baileys or Tia Maria, and thick cream then floated on top. A bit like an Irish coffee!

@Petter I have heard of Rooibos...although I didn’t know what it was. Thanks for the explanation.

My mother, who was Mormon drank Postum. Before she converted she loved coffee. Postum was/is just a grain based coffee substitute. The taste sort of resemble instant coffee, but even the worst instant coffee still usually tastes better.

Don't forget the other grain beverage coffee substitute, Pero. It tastes worse than Postum.

It's revolting. IMO

What is Postum?

One of those wholesome things. Thankfully I never knew anyone that wholesome! 😉

I did have an Auntie who gave me Ovaltine though.

@RavenCT Let my clarify my reason for asking this question instead of just looking it up. So others wouldn't have to. Socialization at it's most basic. The conveyance of information by communication between people.

@bingst You mean LMGTFY syndrome? If I have the time I tend to do it.... lol

It's an Achilles heel of sorts. Plus in this instance - people may not know that companies specialize in putting out things that people have nostalgia for.

The Vermont Country Store Specializes in Candy and other things I haven't seen in a good 45 years or so. It's Nostalgia on a Webpage! 😉

@RavenCT No, I'm talking about speaking in references. There seems to be an assumption that ppl will just know what you're talking about, or if they want to know they can and should just look it up. Just like "LMGTFY" syndrome. Never heard of it before. Bleh.

@bingst @RavenCT Ovaltine - real name Ova Maltine - is a Swiss concoction created from eggs and malt, with cocoa added. It makes a good additive to milk, hot or cold.
Didn't have to look that up - I used to call it Ovaltine, then made friends with a Swiss couple who told me its name was changed for the English-speaking market.

@bingst We need to get you current on the basics. LMGTFY is something you've been known to do. lol So you must learn the abbreviation. Then you can torment others with it.

I get it though - but how do you know which things all know - and which things all people don't know? Baffling isn't it? lol

See that's why Memes are actually good - they include a photo and information. Helps people figure out what you're getting at.

@bingst, @Petter We are also in "A Christmas Story" season and the part where he's drinking Ovaltine and decoding will be along shortly! 😉

@RavenCT Eggs-actly. Whilst checking the DNA code of the malted source.

I was pretty sure I was the only one who remembered postum. Black glue...

Postum was big in my Grandmother's generation. I remember her still drinking it in the 60s.
