I’m thinking about the homeless today. Why does society make life so difficult for some people, that they end up on the street without anywhere to stay or basic amenities such as a shower or shampoo?
There is a pretty good safety net in most Western Developed Market Countries, plus the unemployment rate in the USA is around 3.7%, so anyone capable of working can find a job to pay for some form of roof over his head. The problem is most often mental illness/drug addiction. The USA is a tremendous failure at solving the problem of how to care for those people.
As with other necessities, I've been thinking a lot about non-profit housing. A lot of what I've been hearing about the homeless problem, for example in Los Angeles, sounds like a lot of it stems from housing... rent... being too high. It's my suspicion that landlords simply charge what they think the market can tolerate; the more profit, the better.
Mental illness in many, perhaps? Voices, uncontrolled urges?
That might be, as well as substance abuse problems. But getting help with either of these problems is even worse when one doesn't have stable housing, much less when one is homeless. I know some pilot programs are being done that emphasize housing first, which I've heard are showing positive results.
