People everywhere were rightly outraged when they learned that Mylan was selling EpiPens for around $300 each, making it impossible for many families to afford this life-saving medication. But it raised a few eyebrows when the generic alternative was also priced at $300.
Now, an investigation into a powerful “cartel” of U.S. drug companies reveals that 16 generic manufacturers struck a deal to inflate the prices of more than 300 prescription drugs including insulin, inhalers and antibiotics.[1]
To protect the American people from this price-fixing scheme, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Jan Schakowsky have introduced the Affordable Drug Manufacturing Act ― a bill that would break up drug cartels by allowing the U.S. government to manufacture generic drugs.
As Senator Warren says:
“In market after market, competition is dying as a handful of giant companies spend millions to rig the rules, insulate themselves from accountability, and line their pockets at the expense of American families.”
We need bold action to transform the pharmaceutical industry to protect Americans from price gouging. This bill, along with the Sanders-Khanna legislation announced last month, would dramatically lower the prices that Americans pay for medication.
