I'm moving to NYC by the end of the month, any advice ladies and gentlemen?
Greatest city on earth. Hope you enjoy it.
Let me know when you move I will buy you a beer.
Where are you moving from?
@Naeem the trains are better in NYC, research train lines and neighborhoods. I lived off the 6 line, it was a rough area a few years back and was in the Bronx. Queens near the 6 line puts you right in midtown, Brooklyn is nice but expensive and LI and SI take for EVER to get to. You can also take ferries in from northern NJ or from the Amtrack lines if you work in the heart of the city.
Situational awareness and learn the culture. Most people who go to NYC think my kind are rude, it’s just that you don’t divert traffic. People are very busy and if you walk in a group where you block passing versus by walking in tandem you’ll get stink eye.
Also, have a good, “I’ll cut you” look if people try to sell you shit and keep your wallet in your front pocket.
The rest is really easy, try new food and explore the neighborhoods! There’s lots of great free events if you schedule around WHEN they are free!
Get Guns... get a lot of Guns. And make sure plenty of Ammo... a lot of Ammo. Just kidding, but nra is Not.
yeah and a bullet proof vest! hahaha and a body guard. Three, actually! and rabid dogs that protect only him aaaand... a needle and vile full of disease tainted blood he can use as a detourant to possible attackers. aaand... an AK47 and a rooftop.
I think he should be fine then, what do you think Gipsy? haha
@Sadoi nra formula always been when there is a gun problem... throw more guns to the problem. That makes me feel safe. I think I already did the tale of my deceased brother in law that checking his coats when he died (and that new yorker had too many of them). We found an automatic .cal 45. My sister didn't knew nothing about. We just laughed because that was like him. "The gun was in the coat when he bought the coat"... he will say. I like your bullet proof vest and do not forget the gas mask them... you can never be too careful. We talking large city in america protected by the nra.
@GipsyOfNewSpain ooh true! Never thought of the gas mask
Do not carry large amounts of cash. Keep your credit cards driver's license and ID separate from your wallet. When the mugger asks, give him the wallet do not resist. Never go anywhere alone. Leave NYC as quickly as you can. I have attended many events downtown. Always came by bus directly to the venue and returned home immediately following the event. Remember, Trump"s shithole comments. NYC tops the list for shitholes of the world.
But DO carry Bear Mace and a Taser. Do Wear a bulletproof vest!
@Naeem me too!! crosses fingers and sends prayers Naeems way haha!
Hey you should begin a written journal to Share with us your Journeys!! Then we can follow along as you become acclimated to your new city! I think that would be awesome!! Syrian in the City!! i WOULD read that!! journal with words and photos of your experiences would be amaaaaazing!
@Naeem YES! Maybe liikke... new foods, international dishes and well know iconic restarants, different parts of the city, neighborhoods, unique cultural convergences in certain regions of the city, landmarks of all manner... your experience being in a city like New York, period, would be interesting.
I think it could be super cool!
I was born there and have always lived here.I own a house in Queens long Island .Housing and real estate tax is ridiculously expensive compaired to anywhere else unless you do not live in one of the 5 boroughs. If you can afford it it's ok .Every thing here is over priced like car insurance etc..If you have any questions i will answer them.
Sounds as bad as San Francisco. A lot of my family resides there. I am a californian and the cost of living in our cities is pretty astonishing as well.
If you NEED a car it’s basically the same cost as rent to park in Manhattan. Queens is very doable parking though.
Scottdale, PA small cute town in Pa, kind of quaint, very little crime rate. We get snow, but not as much as you! So many interesting things to do Pittsburgh is only 30 miles away! Plus we have the mountains very close. They ski.
It's been a while since I've spent any time there, but as I recall, it was quite expensive. From what I understand, it's even more expensive now. Hope you've got a really high paying job so you can afford to rent a decent place. If not, invest in rat traps and roach motels. Make friends with whomever runs the local bodega. Be nice to your super, but don't be a pushover. Don't be afraid to commute into the city. Good luck!!!
Dang! sounds like he's moving in to a war zone! I was saying in the above post that San Francisco is pretty costly too. A lot of my family is in the bay area. My mother is from Monterey and its hellishly expensive there as well. My uncle is in Halfmoon Bay and its reaaally expensive there.
Overall, excellent, well thought out advice
Anything I have to say is bad.
So I don't want to spoilt he experience for you if this is something you have your heart set on.
All I'll say is shop around throughly to find the best apartment prices that fit inside your budget.
Also, look at reviews on the apartment buildings.
I've encountered a lot of overpriced nightmare buildings in Midtown.
I haven't been in NYC in 8 years, I don't know how it is now.
No, but best of luck! I am not a New York City kinda person now, gotta go there when you are younger!
