It is a possibility, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Robert Reich had an opinion piece recently where he said a former GOP legislator he's in touch with, who's in touch with current GOP legislators, claims there's already more than enough GOP senators "privately" supportive of impeachment, to side with the Senate Democrats in any impeachment trial. They are just, in their usual craven way, waiting for "the right moment" to go Et tu, Brute?" on Trump.

The fly in this particular ointment is that what they are waiting for supposedly is Mueller's final report, which will NOT be released in 2019. Maybe in 2020. If they're looking for cover from that, they're not going to get it. Mueller's investigation has already produced more convictions and indictments than we have a right to expect at this early stage, but there's no historical or evidential basis, for example, in the current reporting that he'll be "wrapping it up" "as soon as February".

What maybe will substitute adequately for Mueller's report, is the constant and ongoing drumbeat of indictments and convictions from Mueller, SDNY and probably soon, other state jurisdictions, and politically damaging revelations incidental thereto, as well as to Congress suddenly exercising actual oversight and having their own investigations (mostly, finally, not sham investigations). At some point there will be enough political damage to the GOP that they will cut their losses and turn on Trump. It will have ZERO to do with morals or ethics or democracy or the Good of the Country, it will have everything to do with minimizing political damage to the GOP and consequently eroding its chances to be viable power brokers in the future.

Rationally, I think that the GOP has already waited way too long to salvage their reputation and credibility, but perhaps I'm not cynical enough and maybe their calculus is correct. Also, the Democrats are not exactly covering themselves in glory across the board, and serving as a truly effective alternative to the GOP in people's hearts and minds. They are still waging foolish internicene battles against the progressive wing of the party, etc.
