We keep being told that the infrastructure needs updating or replacement. Why aren't building codes changed to take advantage of new technology like solar panels to replace glass and advances in cooling buildings?

If it's cost effective to put in solar panels, people will put in solar panels.
Do you want to force people to put things on their buildings that don't make financial sense?

@maturin1919 Well by all means build a commercial building with solar panels on it. If you are correct, you will have a huge advantage over the people who don't use that technology. If you are incorrect, you will lose money on a technology that isn't yet cost effective.
Codes do that now in some cases. If it was done to code the cost would come down as there was more call for the product.

You are payoing for the lack of code in your insurance premiums.
@Marine paying for the rich too stay rich.
@LeighShelton When a house in a tornado zone isn 't built to with stand wind the insurance complany pays for the damage and the rates whereever they sell go up.I sold insurance for 35 years and have seen this be the case. During my employment I have seen a house insured for $200000 go from$!95 to now $600.. It will get worse because in order to keep premiums down the deductable on this same home went from $100 to $2000.
@Marine like I said paying to keep the rich richer and keeping you poor with less options.
Building codes are updated based on new advancements in technology and research revolving safety and small scale environmental concerns. What you're referring to are progressive ideologies that are not considered mandatory by the government.

Building codes in my town have not been updated since 1960.
@Marine Then your regulatory officials are not doing their job.
@mattersauce Yup they are republican and do not want to spend any money for anything. We have roads needing repair,schools that need repair and our parks are terrible.
If new buildings took part in using new technology in building new buildings a large reduction on the use of currant power resources could be achieved. The same goes for cooling systems. We continue to build using the technology of 50 years ago when we could be improving buildings to with stand tornadoes ,floods and hurricanes and thereby reduce the cost of insurance. Why dowew rebuild homes in flood planes only to have them flood over and over again.
