actually it works best within an hour of exposure, which is usually not possible since to get this treatment you need a visit to evaluate your risk, and a blood test whose results may not come back within an hour (or 72 hours?) as time ticks on, effectiveness decreases. the drug is good ol' azt, and while it reduces the risk of developing hiv, it does not eliminate it. i should think the biggest problem with relying on this is timely access. i have no idea whether insurance generally covers it, nor whether medicare/medicaid would.
