When I was looking for my home, I had some lists, “must have”, “highly desirable”, and “would be nice”. On the top of my “must have” list was “natural gas cooking”. I told more than one realtor not to even show me anything that didn’t have natural gas. Sometimes, the listings don’t include that information, though, so sometimes I looked at places with electric stoves, and while they might have been okay, I had to rule them out. Then one day, I walked into a place, and it felt like I just came home. It had gawdy colors on the walls, awful carpet in the bedrooms, was filthy dirty, needed some repairs and had an electric stove with a glass cooktop. I knew immediately I would be moving into this place. Even when our mind is closed, it can open.

I chose my home for the view of the Cascade foothills from every window.

Sunrise sets the mountains aglow.

In the evening, the sun drops behind the Cascades 90 minutes before dark. The temperature cools. A great time to run or walk in the summer. Gradually the blue sky deepens into a Maxfield Parrish blue with black jagged outlines of mountains. Stunning.

In the Fall, languorous, long, golden sun rays filtering through yellow leaves turn the evenings warm and golden. We have gorgeous "Indian summers." Magical.

When I found my house, I was getting divorced and needed to move closer to where my kids would be living. This was in '83. Had been having dreams about meeting my oldest brother on the 3rd floor of the grade school we used to go to. My older brother had passed in '66. Kept having similar reoccurring dreams. When I was house shopping I found this house across the street from that school. I thought, what the heck, I'll look at it. It was owner financed and within my newly divorced budget. When I walked through the door, I thought, "I'm home". Been living here ever since, through thick and thin. It still feels like home. It's 100 years old.

Something invaded my dreams or perhaps it was the power of suggestion. I tend to go by how I feel. Was on a genealogy trip to one of the areas where some of my ancestors had once lived and got a similar feeling of home. Didn't do that in every area I visited, but in this one particular area I got goose-bumps.

That is exactly how it works, isn’t it?

Creative flexibility beats brittleness every time.
