I got my first pair of bifocals the week my mother died. my sister and i were cleaning out her fridge, eating what we didn't want to throw away; i found some gefilte fish and dolloped some white chrain (horseradish) on the side. unfortunately, since i am quite far-sighted, i could not see the difference between the gefilte fish and the chrain and took a huge spoonful of the latter all at once. maybe steam came out of my ears and maybe i just imagined it, but i went for an eye test and ordered bifocals the next day.

well, i have been wearing trifocals for at least a decade now, but this afternoon, i did the same damned thing i did in my mother's kitchen.
