Senator Rand Paul will have surgery to repair hernia in CANADA!
Cost between $5000/8000
This in from my Canadian friends, "I can't speak exactly on the Ontario health care plan, but it's going to be fairly similar to what we have in British Columbia since it is all governed at a high level by the Federal Canada Health Act. In BC, every resident is automatically covered (although we currently have a mandatory health insurance premium that does not exist anywhere else in Canada and it's going away here, too). If you meet the eligibility requirements, then you are covered by the Medical Services plan. Not only does the MSP cover you, but under the Canada Health Act, it's illegal for you to pay for your own basic health services. So, if a Canadian went to that hospital for a covered procedure, the Ontario government would pay the hospital for the service at an established rate. A Canadian would not be able to pay the hospital in order to skip the line.
Anyone who is not eligible for coverage by MSP is direct billed by the provider. If you wanted to come up here and visit a doctor (or visit one after you hurt yourself skiing), you are more than welcome to. They will bill you. We have an accounts receivable department and a cashier. We can process your credit card (and at 3 of the 4 Health Authorities I work with, they have mobile devices to collect billing information at the bedside once your admitted)."
I’ve just read the story.. This is not a private hospital. Any Ontario resident covered under OHIP can go there for care. He has to pay because he’s American just as he would if he went to any Canadian facility. It’s sounds better in the media if they claim it’s private.
He will claim the money paid for this surgery against the neighbour that jumped him over a year ago as that litigation is still pending.
I know we are rife with iatrogenic harms in the US,but just curious - do you have any idea how the US compare to other countries?
And yet, Republicans made it illegal for Americans to go to Canada to get their prescriptions filled.
@Morganfreeman , Indeed. I remember George W Bush addressing the nation on the topic of why getting your drugs outside the U.S. is now illegal. It was one of the lamest excuses I've heard in my life - "Why did we make it illegal? Cause we don't want them drugs to kill ya". Then came his stupid smirk as if you were an idiot if you didn't "already know that".
And he hates socialized medicine! Hypocrite Plus!
"His hernia procedure is likely to cost between $5,000 and $8,000, the newspaper reported, citing court documents.
The hospital where Paul will be treated, the Shouldice Hernia Hospital, is "the only licensed hospital in the world dedicated to repairing hernias," according to its website.
Kelsey Cooper, a spokeswoman for Paul, told The Hill that Paul chose to have his surgery at the Canadian hospital because it is a "world renowned hospital."
“This is a private, world renowned hospital separate from any system and people come from around the world to pay cash for their services," Cooper said in a statement. "
It is he's money but We are the ones paying his salary. I thought America had the greatest Health System. If their health system is so good why doesn't it just stay there
@Treehugger wow. You can't be that dense. There are doctors and specialty clinics all over the world. Furthermore, what you are saying is the equivalent of saying "if someone vacations in another country and rents a beach house there, why don't they just stay there?"
Libertarians believe in OPEN borders and the free exchange of people, services, and money across borders.
I can promise that Rand Paul has NEVER said that we have the greatest "health system" in the USA or that citizens should use USA hospitals and doctors exclusively.
@Treehugger would you argue that because we "pay the salary" of a senator that they shouldn't be allowed to spend $8000 on a vacation for their family to a foreign country???? Earned money can and SHOULD be spent by the wage-earner in a manner that they see fit.
@SkotlandSkye Shouldn't he not refer to Universal Healthcare as slavery if he is going to a purely socialist health care system for treatment?
[gritpost.com]
@UrsiMajor the hospital he is going to is PRIVATE and not attached to any SYSTEM.
@SkotlandSkye I dug deep because I have the OCD. According to this web page, this hospital provides free basic services to Ontario citizens. Correct me if I am mistaken or misinterpreting this as I may well be.. It looks like any Canadian who has been a resident of Ontario for 3 months gets free basic health care from the government. Shouldn't a place like this be shunned for that?
"Ontario Patients
Ontario’s Hospital Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers all costs to Ontario residents for public ward rate hospital accommodation and physician services.
Semi-private rooms are available at an additional cost. Patients with private insurance may be eligible for reimbursement on submission of paperwork we provide to you on discharge. We do not bill insurance companies directly on your behalf.
All charges are payable on admission by credit card, bank draft or cash.
Non-Ontario Canadian Resident Patients
Provincial health insurance plans cover all costs to Canadian residents for public ward rate hospital accommodation and physician services. Hospital ward charges are billed directly to respective provincial health ministries, with applicable physician services subject to payment by patients on admission. These fees may be submitted to provincial health plans for reimbursement based on paperwork provided to you on discharge. The amount you will be reimbursed will be dependent on your provinces applicable schedule of medical fees.
All qualifying patients will receive an admission letter with a breakdown of fees specific to their surgical procedure and related hospital stay.

US and International Patients
All patients who have submitted their medical questionnaire for assessment and have been qualified for surgery will receive a letter outlining our estimated fees specific to their stated surgical procedure and related hospital stay. Patients with private insurance coverage may be eligible for reimbursement on submission of paperwork provided to you. We do not bill insurance companies on your behalf, however, Shouldice Hospital has no-cost consultants trained to help you with your claim (as foreign insurance coverage is complicated we encourage all patients to pre-approve their coverage prior to admission).

Cock sucking hypocrite.
Hypocrite!?
@Morganfreeman his language is fine. He is a hypocrite!!!
@Morganfreeman Rand Paul is the hypocrite.
Why, he has excellent benefits I’m sure. Canada has exceptional healthcare but I don’t see the purpose. It’s so ironic that he hates universal healthcare but there he goes. Hypocrisy at its finest.
