I have just seen an item on the news saying that we should all eat less meat, dairy, etc to prevent millions of deaths and prolong all our lives. Why do they want to prolong lives? People are living much too long already.

I do not know about you but i do not believe there is any after life and that being said I would like to stay around for as long as possible! I enjoy life and desire to keep it for as long as possible.

Like you I want to stay around as long as I enjoy life, but when I don't enjoy it any more, I want to go.

@CeliaVL I support your decision to determine when it is time to go.

Of course I agree that we should all be eating healthier diets, that we should eat a lot less environment-damaging beef, that food standards should be higher, etc. And I agree that the emphasis should be on living better, not simply living longer. But the diet and medical professions seem to be obsessed with length rather than quality of life.

I agree. People aren't dying off quick enough.
Eat more meat. Take drugs. Engage in risky behavior.
I'm going to laugh my ass off when the next plague comes through.
Right up until it's my turn to croak.
I'm only going to stop laughing because I'll be dead.

To "prolong life" is not necessarily a good thing inasmuch as that extended life means more life as an old person. Being 75 years of age, I can attest that a longer life is not necessarily all that wonderful.

Exactly my point.

"Why do they want to prolong lives? " I would think that is an important aspect of life.

That is most definitely wholly subjective.

Perhaps, but that is not a good way to do it, maybe there is a hope that as we become a post Christian society, we can have the benefit of euthanasia available from our health services when we become too unhealthy to enjoy life. But making yourself unhealthy to start with is a very counter productive way to go about it.

What's wrong with living longer and healthier lives?? If this is going to be the norm moving forward society needs to adjust.....

Celia its not necessarily about living longer, its about living well. We are not built to live off a great deal of hormone and anti-biotic enhanced red meat. As for me I want live a long long long time and annoy all the young carers!

How "well" can someone live in their 80s.90s, 100s? I cringe everytime I see a centurion sitting in front of a birthday cake on the news. What the F....is wrong with people? a 100 + year-old person in front of their birthday cake is not "cute". If it were me, I would kill someone.

@dahermit That was my point.

A big part of the overpopulation issue concerns not just births but people living longer lives. According to economists (the cornucopian kind) part of the need for more births is to provide for the older generation which is becoming a higher and higher percentage of the general population. Eating less meat (or none at all) has other serious environmental concerns that effect other life forms not just human.

@Gooniesnvrdie Thanks for asking. Meat production is a major contributor to Climate Change, deforestation, land and water pollution, loss of habitat, anti-biotic resistance to name a few

I would think the goal would be to live out our lives more healthy and independent as opposed to the length...quality is much more important than living longer under miserable health or other life stresses...
