I hope that is not true but when you look at the liar in the WH and his constant lies and people still supporting him. GADS
Myself if anyone lies to me - that is a deal breaker.
being lied to and believing the lies is NOT the same thing as LIKING to be lied to. even if you like the lies, that doesn't mean you know they're lies or that you like being lied to.
g
that's a good generalization. it may even be generally true -- but it doesn't say "most" and this site proves, to an extent, that it's not true of everyone (not that we're perfect by any means).
g
You are right. But nothing is 100% true.
@Infinito_rex and that is why when i see something presented as 100 percent true, i say something about it... although some very few things are 100 percent true. this wasn't one of them.
g
@Infinito_rex Death is pretty final.
@Marine I've noticed that
Unfortunately, this applies as much to liberals as to conservatives. I think instead of 2 booths there should be a third one with a knife stabbed heart with blood coming out.
interesting take since there is no mention of liberality, conservatism or politics at all. what are you seeing in these booths that makes a third one necessary? i'm not seeing it.
g
@genessa And I don't see that either but I do see only 2 lines and there should be 3. To me, the issue is about a mind set. Which line would we atheist be in?
@JackPedigo the science line, theoretically. the religion line has a cross, which excludes all other religions. atheism and christianity are not the only two poles. i don't see politics entering into it at all, so i don't know what your comment had to do with the cartoon.
g
@genessa It has nothing to do with politics or religion. It has to do with mindset. There are more than 2 lines. Lots of non-religious are not followers of science. Science is based on reason and evidence. The only emotion that should be in science is a passion for truth. Unlike some I see deeper meanings in things. The world is not B & W like the cartoon depicted. It is many shades of gray.
@JackPedigo of course it is. but you're the one who brought up politics.
g
Most lies are concocted to make life easier, give easy answers and make people feel better about themselves.
Truth and reality almost always involve learning, thinking and doing three things modern society has successfully demonized in civilised people who want an easy, comfortable, paid for life handed to them on a plate as a right.
This reminds me of a Christian saying that deep down atheists know there is a god. I don't think people want to be lied to but people want to preserve their worldview that they learned to accept all their life. Fighting against that is hard and I think this patronizing way of telling them that they already know won't change any minds.
Also this is a misleading image. It makes it look like people were religious because they chose to do so and not because of years of indogtrination and propaganda.
A.K.A., "romantic love"...arguably the most prevalent myth in our society. Right up there with religion. As the lyrics of that old song goes,
By Beyond the Black
"I remember you crushing my heart
You were there when my world fell apart
When I drowned in my solitude
You walked away
Every breath at the mercy of you
What you swore to me, none of it true
Here you are, my love
Dressed all in sorrow today
Tell me lies, lies, beautiful lies
Till your treason won't hurt anymore
Tell me lies, lies, beautiful lies
I'll remember each word that you swore
I remember you drifting away
I was there and you begged me to stay
Couldn't watch, my love
Now all that's left is to pray
I will follow whatever the cost
Couldn't hold you back when you got lost
Never once did I stop loving you
Lead the way
Tell me lies, lies, beautiful lies
Till your treason won't hurt anymore
Tell me lies, lies, beautiful lies
I'll remember…"
That statement is absurd. No one likes being lied to.
There are people whose sense of being alone and powerless is so great that they are drawn to total system religious and political dogmas to find a false escape.
"Tell me lies, beautiful lies..." From an old song back in the day.
But then they are lied to.
the false escape to which you refer is a lie. it's the comforting lie that is satirized in the cartoon.
@Lillyfield41 Then blame the self-serving demagogues, not the deluded.
@wordywalt your reaction to the cartoon is that it is an absurd notion that people prefer to be lied to when the cartoon is showing people are lined up for it.
honestly, i'm not trying to be argumentative, but if you want to get into semantics, you are using an absolute that NO ONE likes to be lied to. the post is not even saying anyone likes to be lied to. the comment @infinito_rex uses is that people prefer the lies to the scientific truth. one may even say that rex is only referring to the people in the cartoon, not all people everywhere. perhaps there is someone way far in the corner who is just waiting patiently for an opening to get to the other information stand?
I'm not blaming the demagogue or the deluded. I'm just saying that your statement that no one likes to be lied to is a contradiction of the next statement of false escape.
@Lillyfield41 1. we can't say all or none and since i doubt there's been a study, we really don't know how many people LIKE being lied to. 2. if they don't know they're being lied to, then they can't like being lied to. they can only like being told something they like, whether or not it turns out to be a lie, which they may never find out. that's not the same thing as liking being lied to. so absolutes are wrong in both directions.
g
@genessa yes correct
@Lillyfield41 i forgot to mention what mark twain said, and i paraphrase here, but he said it is easier to fool people than to convince them they've been fooled. that speaks a bit toward most people not liking to find out they've been lied to.
g
yes, it's so much easier than challenging yourself to think differently and actually be exposed to some truth.
