I suppose I’ve always been an Athiest, but for years I was happily non-religious and didn’t give it much thought, nor did I really care or think about religion or believers. That is until someone in the family kept bugging me to read their religious book - It takes more faith to be an atheist or something like that. That made me put more thought into my lack of beliefs and studying both sides and now I find myself pitying religious people. I’d almost rather go through life not giving them much though but that’s not possible anymore.
i don't care what nonsense people believe until it affects their behavior with regard to others. if they're not legislating, executing or adjudicating their religion, or either pressing it upon others or discriminating against those who don't share their delusion (or who maybe even do, but happen to be gay or whatever the deluded ones thing their god doesn't like) then let them be. when they start interfering with the real world, then it's time to say and do something.

And that's another issue for me that never used to be. I see all the stories about schools, politicians etc... mandating religion in one way or the other and it makes me seethe with anger. I know I can't do much about these things elsewhere (except support those who can) but I'm well armed when it happens to affect me directly.
@Mooncopper oh yeah. i try to be nice but you know, having jesus dumped on me does make me cranky!

I’ve never heard the idea that it takes faith to find claims that lack evidence unbelievable
There is a quote from R.M. Pirsig that explains it pretty well: "When one person suffers from a delusion, it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called Religion." As delusions go, it would be harmless if it remained a private matter, like praying quietly by the bedside. It really only becomes harmful when clashes of doctrine cause people to defend their 'turf'. When people try to force others to believe what they believe--because it is considered the True and Only path--conflicts are bound to emerge. Nothing good every seems to come out of compulsory religious conversion. Even though atheists don't play the game, so to speak, we are affected by the rules of the game created by a religious system that surrounds us. And we cannot always be apathetic about what our fellow human beings are doing and saying!
Yeah, once awareness takes hold, it's hard to ignore again. I think most "nones" don't really give religion much thought, but sometimes we reach a point where we have to stand up and say something.
Welcome to the site that allows us to say something, bounce thoughts off each other and maybe clarify our positions on religion, whether for ourselves or to share with others.
Are you a policey guy who works nights?
I used to be, yes. But the nickname actually was more a combination of my brother's occupation and dream job, and mine. He worked for NASA and wanted to be part of building a facility on the moon. I suggested that I could go and handle law enforcement duties there
@Mooncopper wow...is there a lot of crime on the moon? Its not like there would be a lot of speeding. I suppose humans would find a way to wreck it
If you follow my path, you may share my realization that religion based on faith (belief without evidence) asserted as truth, is a major disrupter of what should be a world based on reality where people use truth over faith based claims to base their life choices. I have know people that have died as a result of their (faith) and many others who have suffered greatly and unnecessarily as a result of their religion. A friend, who I helped deconvert, noted we, if we hope to survive (civilization) can no longer afford to allow stupid (religious people) to assert their nonsense without being intellectually challenged.
Pity is also my primary emotion towards those who waste so much of their lives believing nonsense asserted as truth without evidence to support nonsensical claims.
They count it as the cornerstone of their belief and the only way to get to their "promised land".
I don't feel pity for them since their ways prevent society from developing.
@DUCHESSA Pity for them, sorrow for us all. Most theists are too cognitively damaged to understand the consequences of their irrational behaviour.
@NoMagicCookie I understood you perfectly. Again, no pity felt for those who prevent the betterment of mankind.
@DUCHESSA I pity the individuals but abhor the collective damage done as a consequence of their less then rational thoughts and teachings.
@NoMagicCookie Yes, they are bonkers but the damage they cause affects me, you and all those who want / need the sciences.
I recently was part of a conversation where the young woman could die if she delivered her 4th kid. Her family - as ignorant as they come- told her that if she passed it would be God's decision. I jumped out of my seat and told them they were a bunch of st...d / ignorant critters.
@DUCHESSA Not much better then a young woman I once knew. The note her friends found beneath her hanging body read, "I have killed myself so I can live forever with Jesus and my dead father in heaven." I'm sure we both have many such stories. I see you point. Many theists do directly cause death and suffering for others and themselves. For those, I both pity and despise their behaviour and the subsequent outcome of their nonsensical behaviours.
@NoMagicCookie Sorry to say....but what that woman did is known in my book as "Cleaning the environment".
@DUCHESSA An equally annoying consequence of her taking herself out of the gene pool was the mandated talk to discuss her demise. . . During a manditory school wide talk, an administrator stated: "God decided it was her time to return to him." Yea, killing yourself is god's will because you (as a Christian) are not responsible for your own actions. . . I could write a book. . .
@NoMagicCookie Nobody told that administrator that he/she was an ignorant...that hos/her words could lead to massive suicide?
@DUCHESSA Before she killed herself she was sent to psychological services in a Catholic hospital.
@NoMagicCookie Where, I am sure, they made her feel as guilty as sin.
