Helping someone ALWAYS provides the giver something in return: self-respect. The warm feeling you at least TRIED make the world a better place, even if in the end it doesn't matter one single bit.

Its because of this common motivation that I've never trusted someone who is nice to me. I know that's irrational, but I've been proven right so many times

How true....but I have found just recently how altruistic people can be. In my recent bereavement I have been truly overwhelmed by how much help and love I have been shown, and quite unexpectedly in some cases. It has quite restored my faith in human nature.
