I have to disagree with those people on this site who (in the Profile Questions) say that they are certain that there are no gods. Totally wrong. There are lots of them (...in the thousands) being worshiped all over the world by believers who consider their god to be the one true one and all the rest false idols. This is one of the main causes of hatred between peoples, and a reason why we have wars, because each of these gods is a mirror of the society which follows them. Gods are ideas which exist in the minds of men, and their greatest fear is to be forgotten.

Perhaps I've been too esoteric. I didn't mean to get political.
I just thought members might get the joke implied... Do gods exist outside of the minds of men?
Maybe the cockroaches in your kitchen are holding services right now to worship that omnipotent god who keeps spraying them with poisoned clouds whenever they stray and sin.
😉
This site is entitled "Agnostic, Com"... the word "agnostic" being derived from the ancient Greek meaning "beyond or outside of knowledge".
Bottom Line: We are incapable of knowing
... so why argue?
... or why say with certainty (...or with a percentage) that something does or doesn't exist which is beyond our capabilities of detecting?

My only point being that god(s) have and DO exist here-and-now as a motivating force in societies (...much like the concept of Santa Claus, or democracy, etc.) and, as agnostics, we should accept that fact and not mock the reality of it.

But the fact that 'gods exist in the minds of men', as you put it, is exactly the reason to stand up against the delusion this often causes. Just because it's in the mind doesn't mean it is necessary or beneficial. And these gods aren't forgotten, they are simply put onto the shelves of libraries in books where people can read stories about them, like we do with Greek and Roman gods. They should not be the cause of war and conflict and family dysfunction.

Yes but everyone thinks their god is THE GOD.

I do like god as squashed bug though? That would make the iconography fascinating.

Though I prefer cat as god.... Makes for some great statues.

My, aren't we pedantic? Pfffft

1

I like the cartoon. Are they worshiping the boot or the squished GeeZeus bug?

The sacrifice...the suffering....the roach blood spilled. And yet the roach will survive, long after human civilization fades. Amen.

I don't understand what you are trying to posit. You say you disagree with those who say they're certain there are no gods but then make a separate point that the various gods are a mirror of their local societies. That's contradictory.
You might want to clarify @mjcharles.

Martyr. Lol

1

And your point? You disagree with people? I disagree with you and your beliefs too. End of discussion.

My point exactly. How can you disagree with something when you don't even know what it is?... which pretty much sums up agnosticism 😉

I’m completely aware in the belief of said gods. However, you are referring to our personal profiles in which we state our own personal beliefs not those of general society.

2

But when I marked that there are no gods in the profile section it meant that I personally do not believe in a god or multiples of gods. I see no evidence of a supreme being. This doesn't mean that I don't realize that numerous gods and deities currently and historically have faithful followers around the world. And it doesn't mean that I dismiss or ignore the powerful influence religion continues to have on the political, economic, and cultural level, regardless of my personal non-belief as an individual atheist.

If you are going to insist on splitting hairs, then how about this...you took it as a question that had a definitive answer based on historical and anthropological precedence while some of us took it as being more rhetorical and applicable to our own person belief system, hence the word "you" in the question...I did not take that as a plural "you" but a singular one...nor did I take the word "profile" to mean generalizing to the rest of the world...applicable to me was my interpretation...

Disagree all you want...most of us are secure in knowing the intent of the questions based on the name of this site...blech

You're so smart. 🙂

@Sticks48 I am being a pompous ass...fitting, don't you agree? 😉

@thinktwice No! I think you are really smart, and I love your ass, pompous or not. 😉
