I think a big part of it is a psychological need and because of that despite that cults saying that they have to practice conformity and doctrinal purity, they don't care about the misbehavior/immoral practices of their members.
Yes, I think some actors musicians etc are a bit needy because their profession is so precarious.
The Scientologists are even more open about this, they actually have a missionary building called the "Celebrity Centre" where at least one Celeb Scientologist is on duty every day, ready to be introduced to potential converts.
Celebrities, just like regular folk, run the gambit of ... Well, everything. I kind of like that they can feel open about their religious beliefs. (As long as no one is expecting me to sign off on them).
I really hate these folks. Patricia Heaton is another one.
