Well, I just joined so I thought I ought to say a little something... I've juggled with adjectives for a while after I rejected the roman catholic faith I was born into (some Italian heritage) at age 11 or so, about right after my 'confirmation' and 'profession of faith' (I was in a play about the nativity at my local church on xmas eve. I played a shepard who called out the north star). Alongside a science narrative, I was thought about religion in catholicism class. I just ended up thinking the first, with it's evidence, rational thinking and solid narrative of evolution, made more sense to me and I declared myself, first, as agnostic. Then a couple years later I embrace the classification of atheist. And proudly, at that. I can still respect (basic respect) spirituality and faith. But honestly I think it's all BS and arguing about religion gets me weary and I feel like it's a pointless endeavor. It's been a while since I've entertained a jehova's witness or mormon evangelist's (church of latterday saints) ideas and speech when I meet them or they knock at my door. I've rarely felt out of place, tho. My grandma (who was the Italian one) always accepted that I didn't believe in god. No one has really given me shit about it. I live in a laic society (Québec, Canada) where most people don't even practice their religion (they'll still might lecture you about it!) Only once did someone freak out on me. My best friend's mom, a devout, practicing, christian, started to panic when I told her I was an atheist. Was afraid I'd corrupt her son or something. But after that episode, she calmed down and never did reject me or forbid me to hang out with her son because of it. So, pretty much smooth sailing so far. Again, I can respect others as human beings, whatever their beliefs might be. So, that's a little about me. Let's see what this place is like!

I think when you come from being indoctrinated into a strict religion - you need to pass from agnostic to atheist. Atheist is a scary word in my former religion. 😉

Welcome to the community-- from another atheist who made a pit stop at agnostic.🙂

Welcome aboard, dantayeule! We are all sorts here within the general spectrum of skepticism and disbelief. Quite a number of us, myself included, initially identified as agnostic after deconversion and then later embraced the term "atheist." For some of us, it wasn't so much a change in perspective but frustration with the inability of the general population to grasp what an agnostic actually is. So I became a ["Never mind, I'm an atheist. At least you know what that is"] atheist.
