My youngish doctor used the term hook up with me, and I was taken aback. I'm 55, not 20. I don't hook up, I might date from time to time. I was offended and amused at the same time.

When it comes to meeting new people...
Hooking up is just meeting someone specifically for sex. One night stands fall into this category too.
Dating is actually taking the time to get to know a person, and developing a friendship with a possibly of a relationship.
Hooking up has other contexts, and definitions which are available on the internet. I assumed you wanted to know what people thought instead of just looking for a definition.

my friend went on tinder and had some really stupid experiences. the most idiotic was when the guy showed up and didn't even take his pants off for sex. Now that's a loser. I felt sorry for her as all she really wanted was a nice person to make her feel good
