I see lots of discussion here of religion-originated words and phrases, most of which can be looked upon benignly as nonreligious in usage (i might yell "jesus christ!" if i bang my toe hard enough, but i am not calling upon the named personage -- i've never even BEEN a christian! -- any more than i am inviting sex when i say "oh fuck" or defecation when i say "oh shit." but one thing does irk me, and that is the usage of bc and ad to indicate eras. bc means "before christ." ad means "anno domini," year of lord." i don't acknowledge a christ or a lord and those terms are not used under duress (i don't yell "oh bc!" when i bang my toe). furthermore, there are actual terms that anyone may use for those eras: bce ("before common era" or "before christian era" ) and ce (without the "before" ). why are we not using those terms? they're not hard to say, nor even to remember.

I agree with you. But, old habits die hard

they sure do. that is why i am being selective about which ones are more irksome than others 🙂)

There are a few of us who claim to actually be religious in our own peculiar ways. That is not looked upon with benevolence. Not at all.

i was talking about "bless you" and "oh my god" being looked upon (or not) with benevolence, not someone's personal creed.

I don't like them either and never have, even when I was a professed one of 'them'. My dad, a minister who knew the ends and outs of historical facts and fictions told me that Jesus was probably born in the spring or summer of 4 AD. Go figure. I think we should just have days of the years (no months, today is the 49th) and forget about the years, or we could start counting down. How much time do you think we have left?

enough time for me to run out of fingers and toes when calculating days! bce and ce would work just fine for me; there are those who already use those terms and then there's the rest of the world lol
