Beliefs.
I find myself profoundly perturbed once again. Why is it that people insist on believing in things? Even self professed atheists and agnostics throw around concepts like Karma and engage in celebrity worship and crystal "science"? Did you not realize when you found your way out of religion that baseless beliefs and fairytales were the problem? It's not what you believe, it is belief itself that is the confounding problem of the human race. We believe that the american justice system can't be perverted so we allow injustices to pile up because we "believe" it will magically come out all right in the end. We believe heroes will rise to save us so we sit on our hands while the world burns. We believe those who do wrong will somehow be punished by "karma" so we make no attempt to correct social and personal injustices. Drives me fucking mad. Stop believing and start doing, would ya?
/end rant
I agree one hundred percent. I'm always disappointed when I discover someone that I know to be an atheist tells me they believe in reiki, chakras, crystal therapy, etc. I feel that spiritual people still want the benefits religion promises, but they make up their own rules.
Okay, I don't need to go on; you got it.
"It's not what you believe, it is belief itself that is the confounding problem of the human race."
Disagree, knowledge is Justified, True Belief...belief is a necessary (but IMHO not sufficient) condition for knowing. If we don't believe in what we hold to be true then we don't know it.
The other things in your rant, Karma, fictions, all are all examples of things that can be believed, but are not justifiable, hence not true knowledge.
hey good point concerning beliefs. to answer your question, why? according to dr jesse bering, it is a human instinct called the belief instinct. in his book, the belief instinct- the psychology of souls, destiny and the meaning of life, he suggest that it is a strong human desire to believe in something greater than themselves. it is the explanation that helped me understand how i could so easily believe in god, and government. kind of embarassing to know how easy it was to fool me. it was because I WANTED TO BE FOOLED. all religious people, want to be fooled so badly that they will believe lies are true, and the truth is a lie
@ToolGuy very good point.
And yet we are not babies. Growing is meant to, and should, include learning to recognize and overcome maladaptive behaviours and thought patterns. It is perfectly acceptable and normal for a small child to confuse, say, television with reality. However anyone above the age of reason who continues to do so is not healthy or well adjusted. Too many folks cling to faith in one thing or another and use it as an excuse to do nothing about that which should be addressed.
The fact that we are wired that way doesn't make it any less of a problem.
Our educational system doesn't promote critical thinking. The masses are better controlled (manipulated) that way.
From one perspective, belief is divisive and unnecessary, yet belief is what we have. It seems to be part of the human condition, maybe because we need to make quick value judgments sometimes in order to survive. I think that it is in trying to analyze and understand our reality that belief is inappropriate. It is inappropriate because in the final analysis no one really knows anything except superficially.
A belief is just an emotion, a value judgment, an opinion, a statement about the person and it has little significance regarding the issue at hand. A mathematician would not say that she “believes” a certain theorem. She would say that the theorem is in accord with other mathematical assertions previously held to be true, and that if the theorem is false then the entire logical system is false and based on incorrect assumptions.
I don’t know anything about crystals but karma is an interesting concept, well worthy of discussion IMO. The irrational beliefs that I notice on this site have to do with an irrational, religious-like faith in the tenets of scientism.
Who you are at this moment in time is determined by all your experiences you had and decisions you made in the past and the situation that you are now. That's what they call Karma (Wikipedia: Karma is the sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences.) It is not really religious based and not really forced into people's minds by some religious institution. One can believe that or not, but it's a quite logical assumption. Karma has not so much to do with religion, other than a wise person (who appeared to be religious) who thought a philosophical- and psychological concept that he shared and that was adapted by others.
For the rest, I can pretty much relate to your complaits. But hé, we are talking about people. People are genetically and socially indoctrinated and in that way destined to follow rules, flock-wise. During millennia of indoctrination and suppression people are so much discouraged in many ways not-think themselves, that I'm not surprised. It's all about controlling the masses and masses that love to be controlled because it gives some security.
I have a friend who keeps using the phrase "Everything happens for a reason". I keep explaining, "Yeah, because you fucked up".
“All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."
REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.
"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—"
YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.
"So we can believe the big ones?"
YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.
"They're not the same at all!"
YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.
"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point—"
MY POINT EXACTLY.”
― Terry Pratchett, Hogfather
Love Terry Pratchett but I disagree. Such things do not matter, to the universe. They do matter to us and it is our responsibility to make things happen, rather than believing there is some outside "force for good".
@OpposingOpposum and such is the difference between the world as we have created for ourselves under the mask of gods and and divine creators as opposed to the earth a cog in the machine of the universe where we happen to have evolved without choice, without destiny, without any purpose other than to be, observe and measure reality for our own utterly flawed understanding.
It is possible to understand and sympathise with the why of fantasy, without approving of it, though that is cold comfort when they are burning you at the stake for pointing it out.
I agree, but some people will always remain gullible, it's sad state, how can we change it?
@irascible I disagree. We can end gullibility by adequately educating everyone and end poverty by sorting out the way we disperse goods. We don't have a shortage of money, housing, food or education we just have groups who prosper by creating false scarcities.
@irascible @OpposingOpposum You are both right.
Change is possible, but, seems unlikely
@OpposingOpposum Not if you face the unpleasant truth that the gullible fall in to two distinct categories
The simply stupid and the wilfully ignorant.
The prior san be vaccinated against with education the latter is incurable and often terminal, but is also highly contagious.
you should read "Sapiens" by Yuval Harari. it will show you why and how.
