reagan started off as a working class democrat but then when he got older & better off he betrayed his humble roots.
like a lot of others he thought that he ended up well off b/c of hard work & brains. if he hadn't got some lucky breaks he would have ended up in a dead end job & nobody would have heard of him.
Right-wing propaganda, he sucked as President, and was an idiot. Why anyone would hold him up as a great person is really beyond me. There was nothing original or important he did but take credit for stuff he didn't do. He did exactly what the industry military complex told him. Screw the public and lie to their face. Trickle down economics was his baby, why doesn't anyone talk about that. They can still remember how bad it sucked for them, this is where the shipping factory jobs overseas came from. Stop the propaganda and look up facts.
@Diagoras Too true, but I always try.
"Capitalism and socialism are somewhat opposing schools of thought in economics. The central arguments in the socialism vs. capitalism debate are about economic equality and the role of government.
"Socialists believe economic inequality is bad for society, and the government is responsible for reducing it via programs that benefit the poor (e.g., free public education, free or subsidized healthcare, social security for the elderly, higher taxes on the rich).
"On the other hand, capitalists believe that the government does not use economic resources as efficiently as private enterprises do, and therefore society is better off with the free market determining economic winners and losers.
"The U.S. is widely considered the bastion of capitalism, and large parts of Scandinavia and Western Europe are considered socialist democracies. However, the truth is every developed country has some programs that are socialist."
"An extreme form of socialism is communism."
The point, I think, is that no-one in the public eye in politics is suggesting socialism. Some promote social democracy, which is based on capitalism and wants to extend pre-existing social systems in America to close the immense gap between the haves and have-nots. Labelling these politicians as socialist is dishonest.
