The Center for Inquiry's Director of Government Affairs, Jason Lemieux, is a veteran of the US Marine Corps. On the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court, he tells what is really behind the Bladensburg Cross case (American Legion et al. v. American Humanist Association et. al.): Christian superiority.

I love CFI (though I still feel they're dropping the ball re: 9/11)!

Just like Penn and Teller in their Bullsh&t episode. They only gave it 15 minutes (half an episode) and their focus was the guy who thought aliens did it. Yeah, that's some real hard hitting investigative debunking. More like fucking controlled opposition.

WTF?!?

Yes, we should remember that everything is all about Ceasar Chrisp! What the hell does a cross have to do with fallen soldiers? If the fallen dead are Christian in one country how do you explain that they were fighting other Christians in another country? So much for the hypocrisy of the cross.

Americanism is something to be avoided even in America. How about making this world a better place for everyone, not just America.

it's unfortunate for others who have resources the U.S. needs to maintain this opulent lifestyle for the few, but even the crumbs that America's policies have brought to all of us, gives us an undeserved advantage, (minus the systems they have set up to send our youth to war) that many would complain if they didn't exist. If you are used to having, it's hard to be subjective about why you have it and the nasty things that has to be done to keep it..

@Touched Yes, however so many millions in the US do not have it at all.

@Jolanta you are right but I lived in West Africa...it's all relative..

Why are we still dealing with this? This has been established policy for a couple of hundred years. The big problem is, is that it will seriously harm everyone, the religious groups included.

My concern is that th SC is always looking for a middle road. Having this as a tradition will mean symbols there for a certain amount of time (including some racist civil-war displays) can stay but no new ones can go up.

Why not keep the plaque and dismantle the cross?

IMO religion or theism is complex. As an atheist there's no way I can respect any religion (I'd be a hypocrite if I did) because it's destructive, political manipulator, and a tool to dumb down the human thought processes. However I can't fault the fact that some people need to feel there's something or someone protecting them and there's some "higher" appeal and life is not the final destination. Therefore for me, this is a very complex decision however I must take the position, have your religion, just keep it YOUR religion and not express it politically unless it stays within the confines of your home and church...don't prosthelytize.

One aspect of this issue is the cross has cost the town $100,000 already and needs repairs again now.

@AtheistNews another is it's a great landmark for the crab joint down the street..and when we were in high school, it was used to direct us places..

Great speech! Thank heavens we still have people with clear minds and purpose!

Yes we do have those people. Unfortunately very few of them are elected to positions of governance and power.

@jlynn37 so true!

@motrubl4u That is a primary reason that as long as religion has a grip on GOP conservative politics, I will NEVER vote republican.

@jlynn37 me neither!
