Atheism is just another religion. Here’s why:

  1. You spend too much time thinking about the existence of God.
  2. You attempt to convince others of your belief, and get angry when they don’t subscribe.
  3. You sometimes establish churches and practice elaborate sets of rituals supporting your creed.
  4. You ridicule supposedly “weaker” forms of the true Atheistic belief system (i.e. Agnosticism, Humanism, etc.)
  5. You hold meetings and appoint Atheists to formal roles within the association.
  6. Many of you turn to Atheism as a reaction against Religion.

  1. How do you know? So what if they do though? I think about banging women like JLo all the time. Doesn't mean it's a religion.
  2. They dispute a religious person's belief. They don't go door to door dropping off pamphlets or telling people they will burn in hell if they don't not believe. They sometimes get angry when the religious don't accept reason or when they blindly follow.
  3. They are infinitesimal compared to religious churches, and they aren't based on faith and worship. The majority of atheists don't even know about them let alone attend meetings. Religious churches and atheist associations are similar in superficial ways only. If atheists go to a party does that make it a religion? If religious people go to a party, does that make it a religion? There is also no strict regimentation of rules or principles like in religion.

""It's a nice excuse to get together and have a bit of a community spirit but without the religion aspect," says Jess Bonham, a photographer.

"It's not a church, it's a congregation of unreligious people.""

  1. That's true. A lot of them do.

  3. What does that even mean?

this feels like a waste of time...

  1. nope. you have no basis for this claim. in addition for me it is flat "false" since age sixteen or so. any thought now is in response to stimulus. otherwise blank on "her worship". makes sense too, since she doesn't exist. plus it is a ludicrous statement. who are you to define what is an acceptable amount of time that others are thinking about that which does not exist. you do not have the right or ability to define my thought parameters on unicorns.

  2. nope. you have no basis for this claim. in addition for me, i don't proselytize and i'm pretty sure i don't care what you/others think. angry? nope. i am more baffled than anything - fairies, myths, legends and their wholesale buy-in by some pretty smart people is truly head scratching. i will point out when things don't make sense to me, but again in response to stimulus.

  3. nope. you have no basis for this claim. i cannot think of any rituals. is refusal to participate a ritual or a church? i drive every sabbath, skip every church/temple/mosque service - literally every one, eat bacon, blaspheme her name, refuse to bow my head and pray... is the ritualistic refusal to participate in rituals akin to ritual practice? i say "happy new year" in response to "merry christmas"? i do check this site daily. and what "creed"? what is OUR "creed"?

  4. nope. you have no basis for this claim. also, just semantics here anyway. parse it any way you want. religions are easily proved imperfect/illogical/false, and there is no proof of the existence of any claimed gods by these patently false religions and myths. the only thing that defines "gods" are religions and myths. when they are proved false, nothing defines "god". whatever word you want to use for all religious/mythical gods are made up and false is fine with me. i save my ridicule for people who tell me she DOES exist, not those who say she doesn't or may not, no matter how wishy washy i find them.

  5. nope. you have no basis for this claim. personally i am not a member of any club but this. i don't find this place religious. i haven't been to any meetings on religion since i denounced my parent's cult other than the odd funeral or wedding and christmas or easter mass a long time ago to keep my mom from getting upset.

  6. nope. you have no basis for this claim. you certainly have not asked me, nor i suspect many other people that "turned to atheism." interesting turn of phrase turned to atheism. more like "turned away from religion." you cannot turn to facts. you accept them or you don't. i would call it more like "recognized the truth."

the real reason i think your initial statement is absurd is my observance of my children. they are not the least bit religious. they don't believe in god. not baptized, not indoctrinated. non-participants. i don't define them as agnostic or atheist. i don't know how they define themselves in that regard and it doesn't matter. they perform no rituals to denounce religion. they have no rituals to celebrate atheism. they just exist without religion. they don't spend much time on it because it is a waste of time. i bring it up more than they do, but i was forced to live it from birth through age sixteen and recognize the stimulus that requires a response. they were/do not. i suspect if you asked them "what is your religion?" they would just look at you quizzically. like, why would you assume i believe in fairies? if you asked them about god, they would simply tell you they don't believe in her.

How do you figure atheism is a religion... I mean.. I see your cute little list of bullet points but actually none of them apply... You just THINK they do... That's YOUR idea... How is it you think your qualified to tell me what I think?? And where did you get these nonsensical ideas? I think your projecting the shortcomings of your own doubts about your own religious beliefs... That's your arrogance getting in the way of your common sense... If there was really a god doesnt he/she show his or her self... And until the day comes when he/she comes out of hiding and starts shaking hands and kissing babies and performing REAL MIRACLES not parlor tricks I simply cannot believe...

  1. No, I don't. I don't need to think about the existence of any deity until proof is offered.
  2. No, I don't. To each their own.
  3. Nope, no churches or rituals.
  4. No, I don't. Refer to 2.
  5. What association? I haven't had any membership offers.
  6. Everyone has their own reasons. Generalisations don't work.

Also, "Atheistic belief system" is an oxymoron.

You missed the part about "eating babies,' and sharing our favorite recipes.

Have you ever been to a Star Trek convention?

The only thing I go is #6. I meet with other atheists socially.

1
  1. I spend no time thinking about the existence of God...why would I? Not worth my time.
  2. occasionally but rarely....mostly I just roll my eyes. I only get angry when they use their religion as an excuse to harm others.
  3. where are these "atheist churches" and what are these "rituals"? I have never encountered that.
  4. not true....I'm glad anyone has seen the truth and hope that they continue to do so
  5. Where are these meetings? Who are these rulers?
  6. Maybe at first....but over time, Atheism just becomes the norm and isn't reactionary at all.

Thanks::::

Some good stuff posted here. I like it when we are given the opportunity to spew in the right direction. And some of us do so with style.

Behaving like the enemy does not make us them. Organizations have similar structures. That does not make all organizations the same.
And: to some extent, you are describing the militant wing. This approach is needed given the assault on our freedom from stupid repeatedly being thrust in our faces.
VP Pence has stated that christ is more important to him than his duty to our country. He is an enemy of reason. We must resist.

Great words spoken by a true believer trolling a non-theist site. Better go back and read numbers 2 and 4, as your post is exactly this (number 6 is the true nail in the cross -"many of 'you'". As judgmental as a southern Baptist!)

No, you've already made up your mind and are indeed prejudiced.

1

Silly, but at least partially true.

Whatever. Think what you want , I'll do the same. We probably won't agree, so.....

Whatever. Thi

I'm afraid to say anything.

Anyone can make anything a religion simply by taking it too far. That doesn't mean everyone else who shares some of those beliefs is religious.

The best part of getting together at agnostic/atheist groups events is the understanding that we don't have the invisible elephant to contend with. We don't say prayers. We don't pat each other on our backs about how great our atheism is.

We rarely talk about our non-belief. When we do it is in reaction to some fucking idiot attempting to enforce their mental shit upon us. Sorta like the posts here that ask for advice as to how to handle such a moron in the family, the work place, on the street, at government meetings,...

That we get together for fellowship, to be among our own kind, satisfies a basic human need for belonging, and acceptance, that is not religious.
