That's synthetic fuel. Although it costs energy to produce, it is nevertheless good for filling in a gap in renewable-energy development. Renewable and alternative sources are mostly adapted for producing electricity, and that has limitations. It is mostly good for stationary customers, and the most successful electric vehicles have been electric trains. However, they cheat by getting electricity from extra rails or overhead cables. Electric trolleybuses are similar, getting electricity from pairs of overhead cables. Battery-powered vehicles have been very limited for a long time, until recent years with lithium-ion batteries for electric cars. But even those are limited -- they are not very suitable for seagoing or aerial vehicles. Synfuels will be good for powering ships and airplanes, because it is hard to compete with liquid hydrocarbon fuels for energy density and convenience.

Turning co2 back into gasoline has to use more energy than it produces, this is a storage system like a battery or hydrogen fuel cells. I don't think gasoline is the fuel of the future, we need better transportation than our current cars. In the short term could help but it would also take a huge capital investment, these plants would be replacing oil refineries so would have to be as large and ubiquitous.

@ToolGuy They may not need huge plants but oil refineries don't have to be huge either, but if you're going to replace them you still have to replace their capacity. I didn't say what energy just that turning co2 into gasoline uses more energy than it produces, which is true. This is a way to manufacture gasoline as a storage medium, there's no free lunch.
