It seems to me from antiquity and beyond, that every religion boils down to giving god a new name. You come up with a name that resonates, and whatever backstory arises will satisfy a certain number of adherents, enough to stake your claim in the pantheon. Your interactions will evolve over time in conjunction with longevity, and whatever power struggles took place, both inner and outwards.

It's why I like to use the Adventure Time "Oh, my Glob!" or FSM references as their backstories appeal to me. As an atheist/agnostic, can also speak in the common vernacular, with its very usage revealing a substantial bit of godview even with limited knowledge of either. Imagine someone sincerely asking, "Who are these Gods I am unfamiliar with?" I'd love to give the backstory, but would still promise never to go door to door with it (unless there was money in it. Your approach might be different).

Most people who claim favor with god also claim to know his name. New names come up almost every generation.
