So this is funny. A friend sent me this today, someone he knew on tinder sent him my profile to gossip about how she thinks I don't know what proper form is. Considering I am a strength coach and competitive powerlifter I thought it was funny
when i was in my late 20s i bought a set of weights with bench. i remember reading that the calgary stampeders (football) required their players to bench press their own body weight. this was many decades ago. i was 160 at the time so i thought, well that'll be a goal. i got there in a few months & then never went further. i was into golf & was concerned about getting muscle bound. i sometimes wonder if i'd kept increasing the weights how high i could have got to.
My 12 year old son lifts weights and plays golf. So far it has helped him. He can now drive a golf ball 230 to 240 yards.
@BD66 ,
it's really important to keep up the stretching exercises. some muscles become a hindrance in the golf swing e.g large biceps.
Jordan from Barbell Medicine who is an elite powerlifter and coach is a certified trainer for golf.
Good for you!
My brother was a very serious power lifter. He could bench 450, squat 750, and deadlift 750. He qualified for the "World's strongest man" in the 110 kg and under class.
I was always into basketball, but I have a very large son, 12 years old, 5'8"and 180 pounds. I started lifting with him while he was training for the shot put and discus.
I got the the point where I could do 8 reps of 200 pounds on the bench press. I don't want to push it on the squat and deadlift because I don't want to risk any joint problems.
I found out that (at age 52) I sleep a lot better if I take 2 days for a complete upper body workout, 2 days for a complete lower body workout, then repeat the process again.
Why do you believe pushing squats or deads would cause joint problems? I mean, maybe if you max out all the time, but not if you train smart. Keep the majority of your training under RPE 8.5 and you shouldn't have any problems
@PolyComrade My knees already hurt and I don't squat or deadlift.
@BD66 yeah, they are only going to get worse with less activiy. Best thing you can do for them is squat, build some muscle to support the joint, build tendon strength as well. When your 80 you'll be thankful you did.
Squat to a box, use appropriate weight, and over time you'll have less knee pain
