Why do you ask?

Your question reminds me of multi-part, college test questions. I'll pass.

Just curious. The form of the question was to get an informed response rather than a one sentence answer.

I cannot support my statement with references, but I believe that addictions are all based on an imbalance in the brain, either chemical or psychological (which may be the same thing). Whether you’re addicted to opioids, gambling, guns, nicotine, food, sex, or religion, there’s something out of kilter with the brain’s reward system. The exact mechanisms may be different, but I believe they all are similar in origin.

I think it's about having meaning in our lives. Meaning fills a hole just like religion used to do. So far, lots of people haven't found a viable replacement for religion and are spiritually empty. Drugs are a substitute for meaning.

Accountability. The inevitable moment where the drugs become responsible for the persons actions is akin to the devout claiming their own actions were gods will.
