If there is one thing I envy the religious, (besides their smugness at all the existential, climate, humanitarian, problems in the world) it would be the church. Not the Vatican, or the temple, or any of that gross shit, but the congregation, the community. I would love to see some kind of free-thinking congregation in my area. Are there such groups out there, and if not, would you support one?
What you are looking for is a UU gathering. They meet every Sunday and most are humanist and atheist. So stop the envy and just go to one. Personally I find people wear me down and the company of my dog is enough. Of course I'm in pain all the time and that is stimulation in itself.
if there are enough sceptics, it would be nice to see a network of free from religion coffee shops across the world, even if they only open Sundays.. Sadly though, organizing sceptics is like trying to herd cats, so it is probably not going to happen.
i don't envy them. b/c deep down i know that they know they are all living a lie.
Universal Unitarian churches can fill that void. Here in Tidewater Virginia we have a local Skeptics/Atheists group that's pretty active as well.
I'm certain that - even if you can't find something you like - there are others who would join you if you started a group yourself.
That’s what everyone is wired to need beyond our biological imperatives, a community. A lot of us find it here in certain groups, but it does help to have a local community. You could try attending universalist Unitarian services (which from what I hear is usually a nondenominational humanist meeting). If there are any Satanic Temple (not Church of) branches near you check out their events too (left leaning politically active atheists with a good sense of humor).
Theres the church of bacon in Vegas for atheists, penns Sunday school (a podcast, watch live on twitch Sunday 3 EST), there’s Dudism if you’re into the Big Lebowski, and Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster although you mostly have to find those communities online too. I would visit Buddhist ashrams if I had one nearby.
My favorite way to find community is probably in the pub related arts though. Find a local music or comedy scene, open mic, pool tournament, bowling or trivia night n dive into any scene or hobby that seems to draw the cooler people in your area to hang out with.
I know what you mean! Communal tea parties, a singalong, home made jam. It’s just the content that gets in the way!
Maybe a place to meet other single free-thinkers?
