More than 6,000 Amazon employees have a signed a letter urging the company to release a company-wide climate plan based on six specific principles. As published on Medium, the letter asks that Amazon’s board and its executive committee adopt the following six initiatives:
Public goals and timelines consistent with science and the IPCC report. Emissions must be cut in half by 2030 from 2010 levels and reach zero by 2050. Goals must span all organizations and businesses and cover the full supply chain.
A complete transition away from fossil fuels rather than relying on carbon offsets.
Prioritizing climate impact when making business decisions, including ending oil and gas extraction and exploration.
Reduction of harm by prioritizing pollution reduction in black, indigenous, and other communities of color, particularly in the South.
Advocacy for local, federal, and international policies that reduce overall carbon emissions and withdrawing support from policy makers who delay action on climate change.
Fair treatment of all employees during climate disruptions and extreme weather events. Unsafe or inaccessible workplaces should not be a reason to withhold pay or penalize employees.
Although Amazon has announced and implemented several sustainability practices in recent years, employees feel the plan is severely lacking.
The six thousand made a bold move. Amazon owes it to the people who support them (the employees and us) to act with conscience. It's the perfect moment in history for Amazon to live up to some humanistic principles.
Amazon is only interested in making as much profit as possible.
I want them to pull it together and come up with innovative clean/green solar solutions. I can't drive or get out, so I'm dependent on my Prime membership for shopping and grocery delivery.
