I'm sitting at the local all service station getting an oil change and saw a little black cat out of the corner of my eye and said "aw hi pretty kitty" and it was a trashcan lid fluttering in the breeze... help I'm so embarrassed

At least you looked more than once and arrived at a more accurate conclusion of what your senses were telling you. You're not the first to spot an object or a bit of movement and assume it was a cat. I have 3 of them, it happens all the time.

Black cats are one of the first things really sleep deprived folks report seeing. Get some sleep!
