Something I noticed today. Real patriotism in action. Would like to have videoed it, but..... Anyway, I went to an open house at a museum for Native Americans along the Susquehanna river in PA. I got there right at the end of some sort of presentation/greeting/short program. There was clapping for the short speeches as I approached. I got to the group just as it ended and the speaker called on everyone to pledge the flag. I turned and took off my hat. As I stood there I couldn't help but notice the number of folks who did not remove their hats or even put their hands on heart. One in particular stood out: a large guy with a red maga hat. Now that would have made a good video.
I have serious issues about what constitutes "patriotism".
I think a lot of what most people consider patriotism, means nothing to me.
I will not recite the Pledge of Allegiance, I won't even put my hand on my heart.
I won't sing the anthem. Most of the time I won't even stand for either.
I come from a military and law enforcement family. The flag and the anthem
don't have anything to do with either.
I'll stand for either, IF I'm with family, and that's only because I don't want to
cause trouble for them. I could give a shit what anyone thinks of me, and I'm
fully prepared to defend my position. However, I know where I live, and I know
that ignorant people can easily justify treating others badly for perceived slights.
So, I don't do things that could cause blowback on them.
I will not pledge to a flag, or a song. That's not patriotism to me. That's blind conformity. It has fuckall to do with respecting my country.
How I show "respect" is by how I choose to live my life.
By living in accordance with the ideals set forth by the Founders.
By respecting my fellow citizens, when they aren't acting like complete assholes.
I'm certainly not going to take direction on how to be a "patriotic American" from 45 or any of his idiot followers.
Very interesting, pity you didn't film it.
But I'd like to say that to me patriotism is a deep feeling, an emotion, and etiquette is just a convention. So a hand on heart is like a catholic sign of the cross, just a convention. It's just my personal point of view, I'm not into symbols...
