First ever civilian helicopter-plane hybrid is coming next year.
Tilt-rotor aircraft hover like helicopters, but fly fast and far like airplanes. The military has had them for years.
Now a production model will be approved for civilian roles such as emergency medivac flights, search-and-rescue operations and executive travel.
People like former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has reportedly has said he wants one, could board a tilt-rotor near his home and fly faster than 300 mph to a meeting a thousand miles away.
About three hours later, it could land on a helipad at the meeting location.
No airports required.
