Hello everyone! I'm a recovering ex-cult member and joined this site in an effort to learn more about life after religion.
I didn't realise I was raised in a cult until I (finally) went to a non-religious therapist, and she opened my eyes to a lot of things. Grateful to have the second half of my life to explore and learn about this gorgeous world we live in.
Since packing my suitcase and leaving home, I've sold a house, gotten divorced, lost my beloved teaching job, and learned both my parents have terminal illnesses. It's been a rollercoaster, but I'm keeping my head up and swimming along.
Looking forward to interacting with others here who have had similar experiences.
When I first deconverted, some people tried to convince me that bad things were happebing to me because I didn't believe anymore. It almost made me go back, but I didn't. And I realized that good things happened too. I just didn't appreciate them when I was sad.
Damn I like your attitude.......hang tough, be good to yourself, and here's wishing youa big load of luck with the rest of your life......
Very sorry to hear of your parents’ illness...that’s the biggie in your statement.
I offer condolences or congratulations on your divorce...please accept whichever applies.
...everything else can be replaced...enjoy the adventure.
There’s nice people here.
Congrats from freeing yourself from the cult and opening your mind to reality. This community will help you with being an Atheist and offer comfort with other issues. I'm sorry for what happened to you and hope that the rest journey of life goes better.
When stepping away from heavy indoctrination & control, it can be helpful to keep in mind Plato's allegory of the cave, reminding oneself of it frequently. Dealing with reality on reality's terms can be a struggle but it's truly what life is about, IMO.
Many of us can empathize with your helping your parents with their challenges. Through it all, keep looking to your newfound reality-based community for support. We truly wish you every success along this new path of your journey.
Thank you Godot.
