BOOK: 'godless' by Dan Barker - An interesting & informative journey from preacher to apostate. Includes relevant definitions, refutations of theist arguments & even a letter from god! Well worth the read for those who seek a clear understanding of the atheist position.
Dan the Mann! Your statement can not be over emphasized.
In this book, the author is articulate and witty and shows his intellect.
As he moves from preacher to atheist he comes tot he obvious conclusions required to become an ahteist from his position.
I admire his ability to let go of his fallacious beliefs when faced with overwhelming evidence thatthey were wrong. I wish more people would have the courage to ask questions and seek out a similar path for truth
Dan Barker does a great of job of letting the reader inside his head to show how he once was and how he is today.
I also love the part where he wroet the letter to the theologians from the perspective of god asking them questions.
Good book.
There's a YouTube video, where Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Geller along with her mom are interviewed by Oprah Winfrey. It was one of the first atheist interviews I watched. I loved the fact that a former pastor was on TV talking about how he was now an atheist like me.
Dan and Annie Laurie are now married and head up the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
I have his "God: The Most Unpleasant Character In All Fiction", but I haven't read this yet. It is on my list!
Along with Charles Templeton's Farewell to God, this book by Dan Barker was one of the first deonversion stories to go into my library, as I was in the process of losing faith in faith. Thank you for sharing this! To me it seems that the highest level of credibility for justified criticisms of the Christian faith should be given to unbelievers, who not only once believed, but in fact were leaders in spreading their belief. As shocking as it may be to the average person in the pew, theological seminaries and pulpits are loaded with people who have strong doubts about the message they are conveying.
