He needed medical help long before he got to this stage...he did not gain it overnight.

I don't blame the parents at all because I have no idea what they faced...perhaps no medical care was available or did not work?

So sad for the kid to start his young life like this...

I'm a retired science and Health teacher. Two of my greatest honors in life were NSF grants to study the "population Explosion" in '71 and earning permanent Health educator certification by passing a bank of tests in NY state around the same time.

One of the studies I did concluded that the growing obesity problem in America has a simple explanation....

Enthusiastic, well meaning parents. What they fed us....and how often...set our diet patterns for life.

Our diet and eating habits formed before we could walk and talk; so it was our parents who determined this.

Now this doesn't mean be angry with your parents. They did the best they could with what they knew.

What it does signify is that parents have a profound influence on our diet habits.

There IS such a thing as "spoiling" a child.

This almost pre-toddler habit formation explains why most diets don't work - the habits are so deep-seated it's hard to change.

Let me end this with a GIF map of the growth of US obesity from the mid '80's to recently;

This is an oversimplification. There are a myriad of biological issues that can be related to weight. Also, once weight is established, the body will fight like crazy to maintain the 'set point' -- which means that if you eat too much your metabolism speeds up and if you eat too little the body uses every single calorie most efficiently. That's just one of the biological issues. There are also numerous psychological issues that affect weight.

Sorry; it's a scientific fact.

We don't like to admit it; but "spoiling" the child is common; and the spoiling comes with overfeeding the wrong kinds of foods, which sets up the habits for our adult diets.

It's been proven.

@ladyprof70 Here's the obesity map....GIF....

As a health teacher I wish what you're saying had more weight....but it doesn't.

@Robecology As a Social Psychologist who has researched the psychology of weight gain and loss, I trust the clinical literature more than Slate.

@ladyprof70 Slate got that map from the CDC. Center for Disease control. The map was clearly labeled as to source; CDC.

Cut out the sugar, cut out the starch, cut out the sodium! That stuff will kill you!

I'd be asking if the local priest has interfered with him. I will get to the bottom of this food addiction problem!!!!

Doctor for testing

First get blood work for any metabolic disorders. I was diagnosed with severe hypothyroidism when I was 16 and it caused weight gain amongst other things. I still have to watch my diet carefully and stay active due to a slower metabolism.

Quite often we use food or treats as a reward to children. Sugar is an easy addiction. It starts at home and needs to be dealt with at home... with lifestyle changes, not diets. If you’re unsure with how to approach it, seek help from a registered dietitian not a nutritionist. Nutritionists are not regulated state to state.

Must be a metabolic or thyroid disorder. Couldn't be one of our kids.

Ignore the opinions of people on social network sites who have no idea what the fuck they are talking about.

Since I am 5'11" and 155 pounds, I would have to assume he isn't mine. I would file for divorce as this would be cheaper than feeding the big bastard.

I'd have taken him to the doctor as a toddler and tried to figure out what the problem was.
