We all like to think that we have an open mind, but I would like to place a question, which is. How would you know personally if you have an open mind or not, is it subjective or is there a test ?
10 Tips on How to be More Open-Minded
Excellent...and very true...
A good read thank you.
Virtually all of my opinions are qualified as I never believe I have all the facts. As I get more facts, my opinion becomes less qualified, but rarely approaching zero(hmm...reminds me of the calculus
Yes that's where I go, but the more facts I find the more I find I don't know. The only thing that seems to last is the old joke. " The more you know the more you doubt, but the world is always run by people who have no doubts."
@Fernapple Nice! It is so true...I know very educated people who know it all that are just as bad as those who are totally ignorant...they have no excuse and no where to go...at least the ignorant can learn if they are open to it...some of the educated ones are closed tighter than...whatever the expression is...I forget...
@Fernapple ...you kind of took the words out of my mouth...
@Fernapple, @thinktwice ...something about nuns?
Not seeking to be "right"...just factually correct; admitting that you might only have the correct answer now but it could change if given new information...
Just having an open mind is not enough...you have to be able to determine if what you are researching or trying to figure out is actually correct...there are a lot of "open minded" people that just have the incorrect information...
I also think that those who do not take into consideration the "experts" who spent years of study and research and, instead, rely on pundits in media, talk shows, etc., are closed minded in a different way...there is a reason for listening to educated people with knowledge and experience...to at least get a baseline of facts to formulate your own opinions...opinions not based on facts is what? shit...
That's a good sum of the issues, thank you. So should I just ignore those people who tell me that I am too obsessed with facts ?
P.S. My apparent request in the post for an objective test, was just a way to solicit just such thoughts. I know I am not going to get one, but you never know there could be someone out there...
@Fernapple I love your posts because you present facts...that is admirable...
@thinktwice Thank you I always try to make a post/comment which contributes something if I can.
Sometimes I throw a rock into a hornet's nest on this forum by saying something controversial;
such as mentioning that gender identity, traits, sexual orientation, and gender presentation are different things, and that everyone has these aspects on separate sliding scales.
Despite their "open-minded" agnostic positions, many here still think everyone is a "girl" or a "boy" with a certain rigid set of characteristics and interests, based on ancient Christian teachings.
Many even think that if people get operations to transition to the opposite gender, that means they also change which gender attracts them.
For all the "nothing is supernatural, and all must be proven physically" atheists on this forum, who ridicule the idea of reincarnation or consciousness continuing beyond their life, I often mention that Einstein taught us that all matter is a form of energy, so since energy can neither be created nor destroyed, we have always existed and will always exist in some energy form.
No reason to think energy souls or entities don't exist, and quantum physics already tells us different dimensions exist.
"For physicists, the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion." -Einstein.
When trolls rush in to insult and attack me for writing such erroneous travesties, I start blocking them. I can clean out entire groups of rude people that I'd never want to date anyway.
